Warthogs Lose Opener of Three Game Series 6-2 to Wilmington

June 16, 2006 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Winston-Salem, NC - Wilmington starting pitcher Tommy Hottovy (6-5) must have been happy to see the Warthogs bus arrive in Delaware this afternoon. Hottovy, who pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed only one earned run, defeated the Warthogs for the fourth time in as many starts this season. The one run that was charged to him is the first earned run Winston-Salem has scored against Hottovy in over 23 innings this season. Wilmington moved into a tie with Lunchburg at the top of the Northern Division in the Carolina League with their sixth consecutive win. In the third inning, Jeff Natale lined a two-run single to right field to give the Blue Rocks a 2-0 lead. Wilmington extended their lead to 4-0 in the fifth on a pair of RBI sacrifices by Natale and Jeff Corsaletti.

The Warthogs finally got on the board in the seventh inning when a triple by David Cook scored Chris Kelly to make it 4-1. The Blue Rocks answered with runs in the seventh and the eight inning to push their lead to 6-1. Winston-Salem added a run in the ninth on a solo homerun by Kelly to end the scoring in front of over 5,700 fans at Frawley Stadium.

The second game of the series is scheduled for a 6 PM start on Saturday in Wilmington. Taking the mound for the Warthogs will be RHP Carlos Torres (1-5, 6.07) and he will be opposed by RHP Scott Shoemaker (4-2, 4.34).

The game will be broadcast live on www.warthogs.com.
