
Hankins Handcuffs RiverDogs as Hickory Wins, 6-3

CHARLESTON, SC -- Hickory pitcher Derek Hankins threw eight innings and allowed only two runs as the Crawdads topped the Charleston RiverDogs, 6-3, in South Atlantic League action Saturday in front of 4,126 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
With the victory, the Crawdads earned a split in the four-game series and improve to 13-8 in the second half and 35-52 overall. The RiverDogs fall to 12-9 in the second half and 55-35 on the season.
Hankins earned his fifth win against four losses and permitted only six hits while walking one and fanning four. In two starts against Charleston this season, Hankins is 2-0 with only two runs allowed in 15 innings pitched. He was relieved by Felipe Garcia in the ninth, who allowed one run on two hits.
Second baseman Dan Schwartzbauer paced the Crawdads with three hits while catcher Milver Reyes and third baseman Mike Cockrell both drove home a pair of runs.
Hickory took a 3-0 lead in the second inning off Charleston starter Mike Knox, whose record dipped to 1-2, as Schwartzbauer, Reyes and center fielder Pedro Powell each had RBI singles with two outs. The Crawdads increased their lead to 4-0 in the fourth fame when Reyes singled home A.J. Johnson, who reached on a fielding error by RiverDogs center fielder Tim Battle and advanced to second on a Schwartzbauer groundout.
Charleston hit the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-run home run to left field by Battle that also plated right fielder Rod Allen, who doubled prior to Battle's team-high-matching 10th homer of the year.
Hickory added another pair of runs in the sixth inning, increasing their lead to 6-2, on a home run to left by Cockrell.
The RiverDogs came back with one run in the bottom of the ninth on a RBI single to right by shortstop Hector Made.
Knox lasted only five frames for Charleston and was charged with four runs, three of which were earned. He also permitted six hits, walked one and struck out one. Kevin Rival relieved Knox and went two innings, allowing two runs on two hits, walked one and struck out four. Brandon Harmsen also threw two innings for the RiverDogs and allowed one hit and fanned three.
Charleston continues the eight-game homestand Sunday as they welcome the Asheville Tourists for a four-game set. Southpaw Phil Coke (5-4) gets the call for the RiverDogs while Asheville sends right-hander Ryan Matthews (3-4) to the hill for the 4:05 p.m. start.
