Ziedins helps Latvia pocket point in 3-3 tie

Torino, ITALY * Stockton Thunder forward Maris Ziedins helped guide the Latvian national hockey team to a preliminary round-opening 3-3 tie against the United States in the 2006 Winter Olympic hockey tournament, on Wednesday from Palasport Olimpico.

Ziedins, in his first year with the Thunder, went scoreless. Aleksandrs Nizivijs posted a goal and assist, while defenseman Sandis Ozolinsh (Mighty Ducks of Anaheim) collected two assists to lead Latvia's offense.

Jordan Leopold (Calgary Flames) picked up the game-tying goal early in the third period for the United States, who also received goals from Craig Conroy (Los Angeles Kings) and Brian Gionta (New Jersey Devils).

Ziedins and Team Latvia move onto face Slovakia on Thursday at 8:05 a.m. PT, with the game televised as part of a cable package on MSNBC from 3 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. PT.

The Thunder faces the Utah Grizzlies on Wednesday at The E-Center, with the opening face-off slated for 6:05 p.m. PT. The game can be heard live on the internet (free-of-charge) and is available for viewing at a $6 "pay-per-view" rate at www.stocktonthunder.com, courtesy of B-2 Networks.
