Stockton Thunder News Release

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah - New Stockton Thunder (8-29-8, 24 points) right wing Lance Monych arrived in time to suit up for his first game in a new uniform, but so did newly acquired-Utah Grizzlies (27-19-4, 58 points) defenseman Scott Basiuk. In the end, Basiuk's team edged the Thunder in a 4-2 loss to the Grizzlies before 2,836 at The E-Center on Wednesday.

Utah capitalized on a two-man advantage to take a 1-0 lead, when Grizzlies leading scorer Ryan Kinasewich whistled in a 30-foot shot from the middle at the first period's 3:43 mark. Aaron MacInnis' errant dump over the defensive-zone glass set up Utah's first tally.

The Thunder fell behind 2-0 three minutes later, when Treavor Peterson's centering bid from behind the net glanced off Stockton goaltender Jeff Weber's skate.

Both teams combined for 70 penalty minutes in a whirlwind of a second period, beginning with Monych's first goal in a Thunder uniform at the 1:10 mark. Monych, who was recently assigned to Stockton by the San Antonio Rampage (AHL), converted a Nathan Martz left corner feed at the doorstep to cut Utah's lead to 2-1.

Utah bounced back with two goals, beginning with Basiuk's power play goal from the high slot that beat Weber from along the ice with 3:50 gone, Basiuk's first goal in a Utah uniform. Colt King then cashed Utah's third power play marker at the 8:03 mark, converting a rebound at the right side of the crease for a 4-1 Utah lead.

Both teams reversed physical course in a relatively tame third period, with Geno Parrish finishing the scoring with 25 seconds left with a rip from the high slot.

The Thunder struggled against Utah's 24th ranked penalty kill unit, posting a 1-for-8 night on the power play.

The Thunder and Grizzlies meet again on Friday at 6:05 p.m. PT from The E-Center. The game can be heard live on the internet (free-of-charge) and is available for viewing at a $6 "pay-per-view" rate at www.stocktonthunder.com, courtesy of B-2 Networks.
