Zephyrs jump on Redbirds early

Memphis, Tenn. - New Orleans hit a pair of home runs in the first three innings and held off Memphis late to win 5-3 Friday night at AutoZone Park.

Chris Aguila hit a three-run homer in the first inning off a rehabbing Adam Wainwright to put the Zephyrs on top. Wainwright labored through 27 pitches, 13 for strikes, in taking the loss. The right-hander gave up three runs on four hits with one walk and one strikeout while recording two outs. Val Pascucci later hit a two-run homer off Blake Hawksworth to give the Z's a five-run advantage. Pascucci finished the night 2-for-3 while Jesus Feliciano and Andy Green each had three hits to lead New Orleans.

Nick Stavinoha led Memphis with three hits and Josh Phelps knocked in his team-best 87th run with a single in the sixth inning. Hawksworth pitched 5.2 innings of relief allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

New Orleans starter Nelson Figueroa earned the win with seven strong innings. The right-hander allowed one run on nine hits with four strikeouts. Nate Field nailed down his 11th save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Memphis and New Orleans play tomorrow night with an Elvis-themed fireworks show scheduled to follow the game. P.J. Walters will toe the rubber for the Redbirds against Zephyrs right-hander Claudio Vargas. First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m.
