Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
Colorado Springs entered the game with a 7-49 record when trailing after seven innings. But a late, three-run rally capped by Mike McCoy's game-winning single in the ninth bucked the trend as the Sky Sox defeated Portland, 4-3 Friday night in front of 4,134 fans at Security Service Field.
The Sky Sox trailed 3-1 in the eighth inning when Christian Colonel's single up the middle plated Kenny Perez and cut the lead in half.
That was the score entering the home team's half of the ninth inning. Matt Miller led off the inning with a single before moving to second base on Sean Barker's sacrifice bunt. The Sky Sox newcomer scored on the next at-bat when Edwin Bellorin's line drive found the gap for a game-tying double.
Josh Towers then pinch-ran for Bellorin. With first base open, the Beavers intentionally walked Chris Frey before unintentionally walking the pinch-hitting Adam Melhuse to load the bases.
That set the stage for McCoy's second game-winning hit since July 30th.
Edwin Moreno (5-4) took the loss after blowing his fifth save of the season. He pitched 0.2 innings while allowing four hits and two runs.
Matt Daley (3-4) earned the win in relief after pitching the ninth inning for the Sky Sox. He allowed one hit, walked one and struck out one.
Both starting pitchers pitched well enough to get the win.
Jason Hirsh tossed 6.1 innings of three-run baseball (two earned). He was cruising in the fifth inning when a single by Peter Ciofrone was followed by Paul McAnulty reaching on an error. The 6-8 right-hander then made his only mistake of the game, giving up a three-run blast to Chip Ambres.
Wade LeBlanc pitched seven solid innings. He allowed five hits and just one run.
The Sky Sox and Beavers continue their five-game set Saturday with a 7:05 MT start time. Sean Smith (4-4, 5.13) will take the hill for the home team opposite Josh Geer (7-7, 4.09).
