Iowa Cubs News Release
Metairie, LA - The New Orleans Zephyrs (57-51) edged the Iowa Cubs (42-66) 2-1 in the opening game of a four-game series at Zephyr Field tonight. LH Brooks Raley posted a quality start, but took the loss for the fifth time in his last six outings despite a 2.08 ERA during this stretch. The Zephyrs lead the season series 6-3.
Jacob Turner was making his first start for the Zephyrs since he was acquired by the Miami Marlins from the Detroit Tigers in a trade that sent big leaguers Anibal Sanchez and Omar Infante to the Tigers on Monday. He allowed a solo home run to Brett Jackson in the top of the second inning that gave the Cubs the early lead. It was Jackson's 15th home run of the season and it cleared the swimming pool behind the right field wall. Turner (1-0) allowed just one more hit through five innings to earn the win.
In the bottom of the second, Chris Aguila led off with a solo homer off Raley to tie the game. The Zephyrs added a second run in the bottom of the fifth. Kevin Mattison led off with a bunt single and went to second on a base hit by Gil Velazquez. Mattison would steal third, which turned out to be a key play. After a strikeout, Mike Cervenak hit a fly ball to right-center that was deep enough for Mattison to tag up and score the go-ahead run. Raley (4-7) would allow six hits and four walks while matching a season-high with eight strikeouts through six innings.
The Zephyrs' bullpen continued their run of good work to keep the Cubs at bay. Jon Link pitched a scoreless sixth inning in his Zephyrs' debut. Robe Delany followed with two scoreless innings. The Cubs threatened with consecutive singles from Adrian Cardenas and Josh Vitters in the eighth, but Delaney worked out of the jam. Chris Hatcher fanned two in a perfect ninth to earn his ninth save and extended his streak of consecutive innings without allowing an earned run to 22. The Zephyrs' bullpen has an ERA of 1.40 in their last 12 games.
The Cubs got good work out out Marcus Hatley in relief. He pitched two scoreless innings and struck out four in his second triple-A outing.
The Cubs and Zephyrs continue this series tomorrow night at 6:00. RH Rodrigo Lopez (2-5, 5.53) will start for the Cubs against LH Brad Hand (8-5, 3.76) for the Zephyrs. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the Pre-Game Show starting at 5:40.
