MEMPHIS, TN - The Redbirds struck first, but were unable to sustain the lead as the Round Rock Express defeated Memphis 8-4 on Saturday night at AutoZone Park.

Memphis starter John Gast scattered three runs on seven hits with a walk and nine strikeouts in six innings of work, while his counterpart, Express starter Chad Bell allowed three runs on eight hits, walking four and striking out two.

Memphis got on the board scoring two in the third when first baseman Matt Adams connected on an RBI-single and later scored when Steven Hill smacked a double to left.

The Express took the lead with a three-run fourth inning, thanks in part to an RBI-single by Guilder Rodriguez and Elio Sarmiento, who led Round Rock on the day going 3-for-4, smacked a two-run single to left.

Shortstop Ryan Jackson tied the game up at 3-3 for the 'Birds hitting an RBI-single in the fifth inning, but the Express would again capitalize on Memphis pitching scoring two runs in the seventh and taking advantage of reliever Maikel Cleto scoring three in the eighth, including an RBI-double by Julio Borbon.

Steven Hill connected on a double in the ninth and later scored on Lou Montanez's single, but the Redbirds' attempt at a late-inning comeback fell short as they dropped the game, 8-4.

Memphis reliever Jess Todd allowed two runs, none earned, on two hits and struck out one, but fell to 2-2 on the year with the loss. Johan Yan picks up the win for the Express, striking out five over 2.1 innings of work, while improving to 1-1 on the season.

The Redbirds and Express are back in action for a doubleheader at AZP. The first game is slated for 4:00 p.m. (CT) with the second game to follow shortly thereafter.
