Tonight's Game-- After taking three of four against Iowa, the RedHawks will welcome the Omaha Storm Chasers to town to open up a four-game set at 7:05 p.m. Tonight is also Devon Energy Hometown Heroes Celebration Night, as well as RedHawks water bottle giveaway night.
Last Night-- The Iowa Cubs used a dominant pitching performance to avoid a sweep against the RedHawks in a 5-0 win. Iowa starter Chris Volstad (3-5) cooled off the red-hot Oklahoma City offense, going eight innings and giving up no runs on four hits and three walks. Volstad struck out five and gave the Cubs their first win in 12 games in Oklahoma City. He threw 72 of 102 pitches for strikes and induced 15 groundouts. Alberto Cabrera tossed the ninth to complete the shutout. The I-Cubs broke a scoreless tie in the fourth with three runs on an RBI single by Brett Jackson and a two-run triple from Dave Sappelt. Iowa also added runs in the fifth and eighth. After getting recently called up from Double-A, Jarred Cosart (0-2) got off to a good start with three scoreless innings, but ran into trouble in the fourth before leaving with an apparent hand injury.
Today's Probable Pitchers-- Jose Cisnero is set to make his RedHawks and Triple-A debut...Cisnero was having a breakout season for Double-A Corpus Christi, going 9-6 with a 3.40 ERA over 20 starts...He led the Texas League with 116 strikeouts, ranked second in wins, fifth in opponent batting average (.227), and ninth in ERA...He is also the only TL pitcher to throw two complete games this year, the second of which came Sunday against Frisco...He allowed one run and with seven strikeouts and no walks...He also tossed a two-hit shutout in Frisco on June 16...Cisnero has won each of his last five starts and seven decisions, and over his last 10 starts, he is 7-1 with a 2.16 ERA...Ryan Verdugo will start for Omaha...Over his last four outings with the Storm Chasers--including two starts--Verdugo has allowed just one run and 10 hits over 14 innings with 18 strikeouts...He's been excellent away from Werner Park, going 4-0 with a 2.80 ERA over nine road starts...Verdugo fired seven scoreless innings against the RedHawks on May 4 in Omaha, allowing just three hits with eight strikeouts...He made his Major League debut on July 17 against the Mariners and surrendered six runs and eight hits over 1.2 innings and took the loss.
A Head Scratcher-- Despite ranking fourth in the PCL in batting average and fifth in runs scored, the RedHawks have now been shutout seven times which is tied for fourth-most in the league. The other four teams who have been shutout seven or more times are squads with the four lowest batting averages this season (New Orleans, Tacoma, Memphis, Nashville). The RedHawks were shutout seven times all of last year.
U-Turn-- Until last night, the RedHawks had won each of their last four home games, putting up 41 runs and 51 hits in the process. And in their previous 11 games overall, the RedHawks were hitting .349 with 103 runs.
The Barnyard-- Brandon Barnes has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games with nine multi-hit nights. He is batting .413 during this span (26-for-63).
In a Pinch-- After Travis Buck's pinch-hit single last night, RedHawks pinch hitters are batting .318 with almost as many RBIs (25) as strikeouts (29).
Fabulous Fernando-- Fernando Martinez has hit safely in 14 of his last 15 games, hitting .350 (21-for-60) with three homers and 11 RBIs.
Shuck-Tacular-- J.B. Shuck has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games, batting .487 (19-for-39). His .303 season average is the highest it's been since May 3.
Uncle Buck-- Over his last seven games, Travis Buck is hitting .524 (11-for-21) with five RBIs. He's had a multi-hit game in four of his last five starts.
Drought Beyond the Midwest-- Mike Hessman has not homered since July 5 in New Orleans. The 19-game streak without a homer is well past his previous long of 12. He still leads the PCL with 27 dingers this season.
The Extra Bat-- Tonight begins a stretch of 16 straight as well as 20 of 24 games where the RedHawks will play with a designated hitter. The RedHawks are 11-12 in games using a DH, and collectively, team DH's this season have hit .276 with six homers and 22 RBIs.
Mound Struggles-- The pitching staff has allowed at least five runs in 12 straight games and posted a 7.11 ERA (84 ER/106.1 IP). They've also allowed at least five in 14 of 16 games since the break. The 118 homers they have allowed for the season is tied for the most in the PCL.
Against the Storm Chasers-- Entering the final regular season series, the RedHawks are 5-7 against Omaha...In their most recent series, the RedHawks became just the second team ever to sweep the Storm Chasers in Werner Park as they hit .393 and scored 42 runs...They've hit 22 homers in 12 games against the Omaha pitching staff...Brandon Barnes is hitting .412 with three homers and nine RBIs over eight contests...Brett Wallace is hitting .392 with 10 RBIs....Omaha's Clint Robinson has smacked four homers with 13 RBIs...Anthony Seratelli has only gone 10-for-45, but half of his hits have left the park...David Lough has driven in 15 runs in 11 games.
