Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

The Isotopes (20-24) were hard-luck losers on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Zephyrs 4-3. The Isotopes have now lost 10 of their last 12 contests, including suffering two sweeps over their last three series.

With the game tied 3-3 in the top of the ninth inning, a combination of bright sunshine and strong wind caused second baseman Joey Wong to misplay an infield pop-up, leading to the Zephyrs scoring the game-winning run.

Isotopes starter Jeff Hoffman exited the game after tossing 5.2 innings. The 23-year-old surrendered three runs on four hits, striking out seven, and walking four. Hoffman's seven strikeouts and four walks are both career-highs for the right-hander.

For the second straight game the Isotopes offense was only able to muster four hits with the highlight coming on outfielder Stephen Cardullo's solo home run, his team-leading fifth of the year.

Catcher Ryan Casteel and infielder Tim Smalling also knocked in a run each on the afternoon for the Isotopes.

With the rough homestand behind them, Albuquerque now hits the road for eight-games, opening up a four-game set with the Omaha Storm Chasers (Triple-A Royals) tomorrow evening before heading to Iowa later in the week. Right-hander Shane Carle (3-4, 6.64) will toe rubber for the Isotopes on Monday. He will be opposed by Omaha's Luke Farrell (2-0, 3.86). First pitch from Werner Park is set for 5:35 p.m.
