South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays, celebrating 20 seasons of hockey in the Lowcountry and proud ECHL affiliate of the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League (NHL), announced today that goaltender Ryan Zapolski has been named the Warrior Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Month for February.
Zapolski, 26, also won the award in December and becomes the first goaltender since Jayme Platt in 2001-02 to capture two monthly awards in the same season. The Erie, Pennsylvania, native went 5-1-1 with a remarkable 0.85 goals-against average and .971 save percentage in February. Zapolski allowed two goals or less in six of his seven appearances highlighted by four shutouts. He became the fifth goaltender in ECHL history to post three consecutive shutouts and had a shutout streak of 212:32 over a five-game period.
In January, Zapolski was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2013 ECHL All-Star Game after stopping all 17 shots he faced in the second period. He also leads the ECHL this season with a 1.68 goals-against average, a .939 save percentage and seven shutouts. Zapolski's seven shutouts are tied for second-most in a single season in ECHL history and stand one shy of the overall league record. His 21 wins this season are tied for third among league netminders.
In 45 career ECHL games with South Carolina, Gwinnett, Kalamazoo and Toledo, Zapolski has an overall record of 28-13-2 with nine shutouts, a 1.93 goals-against average and .931 save percentage. Prior to turning pro, Zapolski skated for four seasons at Mercyhurst College appearing in 109 games going 48-43-11 with eight shutouts, a 2.77 goals-against average and a save percentage of .920.
