
Zach Smith in Home Run Derby

The Coastal Plain League announced Thursday that Zach Smith of the Columbia Blowfish will represent the American Team in the Home Run Derby on Sunday July 17 in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Smith is one of the 16 players participating in the derby.
The freshman from Erskine College has the second highest home run total in the CPL with nine. He also is second in doubles with 11 and leads the league in total bases with an outstanding 99 thus far on the season and is tied for the league lead in hits with 61.
Participants in the Derby have the option to use either wood or aluminum bats for the competition. Homers hit with wooden bats count for three points while aluminum bats count for one point. There are three rounds to the contest. The first round consists of each team (American and National) pitting their eight stars against each other. The top three point totals from each league advance to the second round. The top two overall hitters from the second round advance to the one-on-one final third round. Points roll over through each round.
