Forest City Owls News Release

ASHEBORO, N.C. - The Forest City Owls fell to the Asheboro Copperheads, 2-1, Thursday night at McCrary Park. The Owls drop to 8-4 in the second half and 24-15 overall, while the Copperheads improve to 4-8 in the second half and 20-19.

Forest City handed the ball to Seth Cutler-Voltz (Virginia Commonwealth). Cutler-Voltz threw 7 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits and recording five strikeouts. The Owls ace took his second loss of the summer. Asheboro countered with Stephen Rivera (St. John's), who tossed seven innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits, striking out five batters and walking one. Asheboro reliever Tanner Merritt (East Carolina) earned the win, while Corey Deighan (Charleston Southern) notched his fourth save of the year.

Asheboro got on the board first in the bottom of the opening frame. With runners on first and second base and one out, Jacob Wilson (Memphis) smacked a single into center field. Marquis Riley (North Carolina A&T) scored, giving Asheboro a 1-0 lead through two innings.

The Owls would knot things up in the top of the third inning. Cameron Conner (N.C. State) led off the inning with a double, then crossed home plate on Buddy Sosnoskie's (Francis Marion) two-bagger into the left-center gap to tie the game at 1-1.

Cutler-Voltz and Rivera traded scoreless innings until the bottom of the eighth inning. With a runner on third and one out, Noah Holmes (Appalachian State) pinch hit for Carvell Copeland (North Carolina A&T). Holmes laced the first pitch he saw in a Copperhead uniform into center field, sending Ethan Bennett (Tennessee) home and giving Asheboro a 2-1 lead.

The ballgame lasted a little more than an hour and 50 minutes. All four Owls hits were doubles, with Jordan Betts (Duke) providing two of them.

The Owls and Copperheads will battle again tomorrow night in Forest City. First pitch at McNair Field is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
