Morehead City Marlins News Release

Morehead City, N.C. - When the Heroes of the Diamond, a travelling baseball team comprised of United States Armed Forces service members and first responders, came to Big Rock Stadium to play last summer, the Marlins won in walk-off fashion by the score of 11-10. Wednesday, the Heroes were back in Morehead City for the second consecutive season, and the Marlins looked to have another chance to walk-off with a win.

Heading into the bottom of the ninth, with the score tied 1-1, Marlins first baseman Zach Stephens in the batter's box, the rainaccompanied by an onslaught of thunder and lightningbegan. Of course, since it was only an exhibition matchup, the decision was made to end in a 1-1 tie.

The Heroes earned an early lead right out of the gates, scoring their only run in the top of the first inning. However, Jake Luce scored in the bottom of the fourth on a Chase McDonald sacrifice fly to bring the score to 1-1.

Morehead City travels down the coast to Buck Hardee Field in Wilmington to take on the Sharks on Thursday. The Marlins return to Big Rock Stadium on Friday, as they will compete with the Fayetteville SwampDogs in a doubleheader consisting of two seven-inning games. The doubleheader will serve as the vehicle for the Marlins' Pink Jersey Auction, which will benefit the construction of the planned Crystal Coast Cancer Center to be erected in Morehead City in the near future. The games will begin at 6:05 p.m., with gate opening at 5 o'clock.
