High Point-Thomasville HiToms News Release

GASTONIA, N.C. - Gastonia scored three runs in the eighth inning to break open a close game with the HiToms en route to a 6-2 win over the Tommies at Sims Legion Park on Thursday night.

Gastonia (5-7) took an early 2-0 on unearned runs in the first and third innings off Matt Dillon (L 2-2). Benji Jackson scored the first run for the Grizzlies after he walked and scored on a Garrett Koster error. Then in the third, Tyler White doubled, stole third and came around to score on a Jacob Fisher throwing error.

After the Grizzlies added a run to their lead, the HiToms (8-5) tried to make a comeback as they pushed across a run against Michael Heesch (W 4-0) as Stephen Carmon walked and moved around to third before Jacob Rogers brought him home with a sacrifice fly to trim the lead for Gastonia to a pair of runs at 3-1.

The HiToms pulled to within a run in the top of the eighth inning against Gastonia reliever Nate Steinmentz. With one out, Jacob Fisher and Patrick Koontz had back to back singles and on the single from Fisher, Koontz came in to score on a throwing error from Justin Vasquez and allowed Koontz to move to third. However, the Tommies could pull no closer as Zack Briggs and Alex Williams both struck out to end the frame.

Gastonia added three insurance runs against Johnny Hoffman in the eighth inning to blow the game open and send the HiToms to the 6-2 loss.

Dillon pitched well enough to win, as he went 5 2/3 innings scattering four hits and allowed three runs, however, only one of those runs was earned. The HiToms defense let the right hander down committing four errors to aid the Gastonia cause.

The Tommies return to Finch Field on Friday night at 7:00 when they once again battle Gastonia. Following the game, fans are encouraged to stick around and enjoy a movie on the big screen at Finch Field.
