Wilson Tobs News Release
WILSON, N.C. (July 14, 2011) - Right Fielder Joe Costigan drove home the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Wilson Tobs (5-7, 20-20) bested the Petersburg Generals (2-9, 6-33), 4-2 at Fleming Stadium on Thursday night.
Costigan hit a single to left field over the head of 3B Austin McGowan with two outs and runners at first and second in the bottom of the eighth. Shortstop Angelo LaBruna, who was the runner at second when Costigan singled, was beat by the throw home from LF Michael Gonzalez, but LaBruna was able to avoid the tag of Generals catcher Jorge Saez by sliding around him to score the go-ahead run. Wilson scored one more in the inning on a fielding error by Petersburg shortstop Brandon Scott to carry a two-run lead to the ninth.
The Generals scored their only runs in the top of the fifth. With one out RF Taylor Buran sent a ball sailing over the left-field wall for a two-run homerun, his second of the summer. Buran finished the night 3 for 4 with two singles.
Wilson picked up its first run in the bottom of the frame. Third baseman Brandon Elliott led off the inning by reaching on a fielding error by 2B Tony Montalbano. After Costigan singled, Elliott advanced to third on a fly out to right, and scored on a ground out to first by RF Tony Wieber.
The Tobs tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when DH Jeff Bouton led off the frame with a double, and then consecutive groundouts to second pushed him home.
RHP Clay Murphy got the start for Wilson and lasted six innings, allowing both runs to Petersburg on nine hits and two walks while striking out five. LHP Jon Levin (3-0) came on to pitch a scoreless seventh and eighth and earn the victory, while RHP Tony Wieber pitched a scoreless ninth for the second straight night to collect his seventh save of the summer.
LHP Brian Derner (0-4) took the loss for Petersburg. He surrendered three runs to the Tobs in 2.2 innings on five hits. The Generals committed three errors on the night and botched two suicide squeeze attempts that resulted in two runners caught stealing home.
The Tobs head to Petersburg, Virginia tomorrow night to take on the Petersburg Generals once again. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. On the hill for Wilson will be LHP Brice Rivenbark (2-4), making his eighth start of the summer. The Tobs return home to Fleming Stadium on Saturday July 16, when they face the Morehead City Marlins.
