Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Keegan Yuhl recorded seven punch outs over five innings as Corpus Christi defeated Midland 6-1 Tuesday night at Whataburger Field before 4,422.
Yuhl (5-1), who has five victories in his last six appearances, scattered three hits without walking a man. Fifty-two of his 77 pitches were strikes. He set the pace for a pitching staff that posted three more scoreless frames before Midland (27-29) averted a shutout in the ninth.
Kyle Smith faced one over the minimum while working the sixth and seventh. Michael Freeman stranded three RockHounds in the eighth before Midland broke through on Franklin Barreto's two-out RBI double.
The Hooks had runners in scoring position in both the first and second innings against Daniel Gossett (0-2), but failed to score. That changed during the fourth, when Conrad Gregor's two-out single into left plated Derek Fisher. Fisher opened with a walk and pilfered second base.
Corpus Christi (35-21) added three an inning later, Chan-Jong Moon and Teoscar Hernandez crossing on a throwing error by center fielder Brett Vertigan and Alex Bregman when Fisher grounded out. Moon, Hernandez and Bregman each singled to reach base.
Nick Tanielu's lead-off homer to left on the first pitch from Gossett in the sixth extended the lead to 5-0, and James Ramsey (double) scored on a throwing error by reliever Trey Cochran-Gill.
Gossett finished with just three earned runs, eight hits, and six strikeouts over 5 2/3.
Corpus Christi has won six of seven and 10 of 14. The Hooks remain 1½ games ahead of Frisco atop the Texas League South Division first-half standings. Over the last seven games, Hooks pitchers have allowed a dozen runs.
The Hooks and RockHounds meet again Wednesday at 7:05, Corpus Christi left-hander Kent Emanuel (1-0) drawing Raul Alcantara (5-3). Purchase a ticket and get your child's ticket free on Whataburger Family Day.
