Get Your Shopping Done ... It's the Yuhl-tide Season

June 8, 2016 - Texas League (TL1)
Midland RockHounds News Release

Starting pitcher Keegan Yuhl set the tone, putting up five scoreless (and largely dominant) innings, as the Corpus Christi Hooks rolled to a 6-1 win over the RockHounds in the opener of a four-game series at Whataburger Field.

Derek Fisher singled and stole second base with two out in the fourth and Conrad Gregor's two-out single to right broke a scoreless tie. The Hooks then added three runs in the fifth on consecutive singles from Chan-Jong Moon, Teoscar Hernandez and Alex Bregman, the latter compounded by Brett Vertigan's throwing error, on which two runs scored.

A solo home run off the bat of Nick Tanileu and an unearned run on a throwing error by reliever Trey Cochran-Gill (both in the sixth) capped the Hooks' scoring. The 'Hounds broke up the shutout bid with two out in the ninth on a 1-2 single to right from Beau Taylor and an RBI double to the gap in right-center from Franklin Barreto. The 'Hounds then loaded the bases before Yairo Munoz ground out to third to end the game.

Kibbles & Bits

STAT of the DAY Since May 1, Corpus Christi is now 26-9, erasing a seven-game deficit (over Frisco) to take over the division lead.

- ROSTER MOVES Infielder Josh Rodriguez has rejoined the RockHounds from (Triple-A) Nashville and was in the lineup (designated hitter) Tuesday night at Corpus Christi. Now in his 11th pro season, the Texas native and former Rice University standout was signed by Oakland as a minor league free agent last November (he split 2015 between the AA and AAA levels on the New York Mets' farm). Rodriguez opened this season with the 'Hounds, hitting .286 (10-for-35, one HR and four RBI) in 10 games and hit .211 (8-for-38, one HR and six RBI) in 14 games with Nashville.''

The move has a tie to a RockHounds alum, as Rodriguez's roster spot with Nashville went to Colin Walsh. Selected by Milwaukee in the 2015 Rule 5 Draft, Walsh played in 38 games with the Brewers (4-for-47, .085) before being designated for assignment on May 31 and subsequently returning to the A's. A key member of the 2015 Texas League championship club, Walsh hit .302 (13 HR and 49 RBI with a league-leading .447 on-base percentage) and was named to the Postseason TL All-Star Team with the 'Hounds last season.

The Oakland A's made room for Rodriguez on the RockHounds' roster by reassigning first baseman John Nogowski to the Stockton Ports of the (Advanced-A) California League. In seven games with the 'Hounds, Nogowski was 3-for-23 (.130) with a solo home run.

- The RockHounds are now two games under .500 (27-29), matching their season low (2-4 on April 12).

- J.P. Sportman (2-for-4) has an eight-game hit streak (13-for-32, .406) and has raised his average from .244 to .275 in the eight-gamer.

- Franklin Barreto has hit in eight-of-nine games (10-for-32, .313).
