CORPUS CHRISTI - Hooks pitchers Aaron West and Kyle Smith will sign autographs and visit with fans between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Friday at the Portland Whataburger location, 1010 Wildcat Dr.
KFTX-FM has scheduled a live remote broadcast.
A portion of the lunch proceeds benefits Goodwill Industries of South Texas. Bring your gently-used clothing items, place them in the large fry box and pick up a voucher for a new 2016 Hooks/Goodwill t-shirt, a special offer coupon from Whataburger, plus a pair of Hooks tickets.
West is a 6-foot-1, 220-pound right-hander who pitched at the University of Washington. Selected by Houston in the 17th round of the 2012 draft, the Hooks' No. 14 ranked fifth in the NCAA with 16 starts in his final season as a Husky, with his 36 starts placing him eighth in school history. He began his pro career as a starter at Tri-City (NY) in 2012 and Lancaster in 2013, earning 16 wins in his first two years in the Astros system.
A shutdown relief pitcher out of the bullpen, West is 3-0 for the Hooks in 2016 with five saves, matching the total number of saves from his 2015 season by the bay. He currently owns a 3.27 earned run average and has struck out 32 batters in his 33 innings of work.
Recovering from Tommy John Surgery which put him out of commission for the 2015 season, right-hander Kyle Smith pitched 2 shutout innings in a relief effort in Tuesday's homestand-opening win over Midland at Whataburger Field. Smith has split time in 2016 as a starter and as a reliever and has a 3.84 career earned run average.
Hailing from Lantana, Fla., Smith was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the fourth round in 2011 out of Santaluces High School, where Smith went 9-1 with a 0.40 ERA and 116 strikeouts over 69 innings as a senior. In 2013, Smith was traded to the Astros in exchange for Justin Maxwell.
