Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
AKRON, OH - Gabriel Ynoa tossed seven scoreless innings to lead the Binghamton Mets past the Akron RubberDucks, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at Canal Park. Ynoa and Paul Sewald combined to guide Binghamton to back-to-back shutout victories for the first time since July 2013. Gavin Cecchini reached base safely in all four plate appearances and was directly involved in both Binghamton runs.
Ynoa's solid 2015 debut got off on the wrong foot as the righty surrendered a pair of singles to the first three batters he faced. He stranded both in the frame and bounced back with a perfect second. He worked around a one-out double in a blank third and danced around a leadoff two-bagger in a scoreless fourth.
He settled into cruise-control mode after that, mowing down ten straight batters before Yandy Diaz singled in the seventh. Ynoa closed his sparkling outing by fanning Tony Wolters looking and getting Jeremy Lucas to fly out to end the seventh.
Paul Sewald threw a perfect eighth inning and received help from his defense in the ninth. Erik Gonzalez led off the inning with a line drive to left. Jayce Boyd, playing just his second career game in the outfield, made a full extension diving catch to steal a potential hit. Three batters later Yandy Diaz popped out to short to seal Sewald's first save as a B-Met.
After the teams matched zeroes through the first five innings, Binghamton finally cracked the scoreboard in the sixth. Dustin Lawley, celebrating his 26th birthday, was hit by reliever Trey Haley with one out. The B-Mets third baseman swiped second base one batter later and scampered home when Cecchini poked a two-out single into right field.
Binghamton doubled their lead against Jeff Johnson in the ninth. Following a walk, Cecchini was caught off first base, but advanced to second safely when Jake Lowery's throw from first sailed into left field. Albert Cordero brought him home with a single to left.
Ynoa (1-0) scattered five hits while issuing no walks over seven innings of work. He struck out three and held the RubberDucks hitless in seven at-bats with runners in scoring position. Haley (0-1) took the loss in relief.
The B-Mets (2-1) complete their four-game visit to Akron on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 PM. RHP Luis Cessa makes his first start of the season against RHP Mike Clevinger. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting at 1:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.
