Fightin Phils Split Opening Day Twin Bill

The Reading Fightin Phils (1-1) and Portland Sea Dogs (1-1) finally played baseball on Saturday afternoon at Hadlock Field after suffering two postponements due to the weather. The Fightin Phils lost game one by a score of 4-2 but came back in game two to shut out the Sea Dogs, 9-0.

In game one, the Fightin Phils struck first as Brock Stassi but the Fightin Phils on the board with a RBI single off Luis Diaz to score Roman Quinn and give the Fightins a 1-0 lead. Aaron Nola (0-1) on the mound gave up a three-run home run to Keury De La Cruz in the bottom of the first inning to score Mike Miller and Carlos Asuaje and to give Portland a 3-1 lead.

Gustavo Pierre and Art Charles led off with back-to-back singles off Diaz in the top of the 2nd inning. KC Serna singled home Pierre of Diaz to cut the Sea Dogs lead to 3-2. Nola allowed a run to Mike Miller in the bottom of the 2nd inning, a RBI single to score Jantzen Witte and give Portland a 4-2 lead and win.

Jonathan Aro (1-0) pitched three shutout innings in relief for Portland to earn the win. Nola received the loss after allowing four runs in 4 2/3 innings pitched. Elvis Araujo pitched 1 1/3 innings and struck out three batters in his Fightin Phils debut.

In game two, the Fightin Phils sent Jesse Biddle (1-0) to the mound against Portland's Justin Haley (0-1). Reading scored four runs off Haley in the top of the third inning to take a 4-0 lead. Brock Stassi hit a two-run double while Cameron Perkins brought in a run on an error from short stop Marco Hernandez. Carlos Alonso hit a RBI single to score Harold Martinez.

Haley left after 2 1/3 innings in which he allowed four runs (three earned). Biddle tossed five shutout innings for his first win of the season. He gave up two hits and allowed two walks with four strikeouts. He faced twenty batters and allowed five base runners.

Reading exploded for five runs in the top of the seventh inning off reliever Pat Light as Roman Quinn hit his first Double-A home run with a solo shot to begin the inning. Carlos Alonso walked which was followed by a two-run home run by Brock Stassi. Cameron Perkins scored on a throwing error by Light and Harold Martinez hit a RBI ssingle to score Art Charles who reached base on the error by Light.

Anthony Vasquez and Nefi Ogando pitched scoreless innings in relief. The Fightin Phils would win 9-0 to earn their first win on the season.

The Fightin Phils and Portland Sea Dogs wrap up their series on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field. First pitch is at 1:00 pm. Fans can listen to the game on CBS Sports Radio AM 1240/FM 98-5 and fightins.com .
