Lancaster Stormers News Release
The excitement of Kevin Rivers' game-tying homer in the bottom of the ninth turned into a long night and a loss for the Lancaster Barnstormers on Wednesday.
York struck for six unearned runs in the top of the 13th inning to defeat the Barnstormers, 10-4, narrowing Lancaster's lead in the Freedom Division to 2 1/2 games over the Revs with 3 1/2 weeks left on the schedule.
Lancaster trailed, 4-3, from the fifth inning until the bottom of the ninth when Rivers, pinch hitting for Derrick Pyles in the DH role, reached the screen in right center field for his 13th homer of the season. Kent Matthes followed with a walk, and the Barnstormers nearly won the game when Brian Cavazos-Galvez launched a drive to deep left over the head of James Simmons. However, the ball held in the heavy air, and Simmons was able to sprint back and make the over the shoulder catch to end the inning.
York built a threat with runners at first and third and one out in the 11th, but Scott Gracey struck out Bryan Pounds and Mikey Reynolds looking on the inside corner to wiggle out of the jam. Cavazos-Galvez doubled to right in the 12th but was stranded at second base when Zach Collier was struck out by Edward Paredes (4-1).
Eric Patterson led off the 13th with a single to left off Blake Hassebrock (0-2). Brandon Boggs hit a ground ball to third. It was fielded by Matthes, playing his first professional game at third base with both Anderson Feliz and Luke Hughes injured. Matthes sailed his throw to Yusuke Kajimoto into right field, putting runners at first and third. Andres Perez walked to load the bases. Pounds hit a grounder at Kajimoto, whose throw to the plate was wild, allowing Patterson to score the lead run. Reynolds struck out before pinch hitter Yeicok Calderon drove in a run with a broken bat one-hopper into the right side hole. James Simmons ripped a double down the third base line for an 8-4 lead, and the final pair scored when Hassebrock fired wildly to first base on a bouncer to the third base side of the hill.
The Barnstormers, with Daniel Moskos making a spot start due to Bryan Morgado's ailing elbow, took a 3-1 lead into the fifth inning, but the first four batters reached off Pete Andrelczyk. Salvador Paniagua put York in the lead with a two-run double.
York finished the night with 19 hits, the most against the Barnstormers this season. Cavazos-Galvez had four of Lancaster's 13 base hits.
The Barnstormers open a four-game series at Bridgeport on Thursday night. Madison Boer (1-2) will go for Lancaster against lefty Robert Carson (5-1). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.
