Lancaster Stormers News Release

Madison Boer did exactly what the Barnstormers needed him to do on Thursday evening.

The right-hander spelled the Lancaster bullpen, firing eight solid innings as the visiting 'Stormers dumped the Bridgeport Bluefish, 12-3, in the opener of a four-game set at Harbor Yard.

Lancaster remained 2 1/2 ahead of York in the Freedom Division race while Bridgeport fell back into a three-way tie for first with Somerset and Bridgeport in the Liberty Division.

Boer (2-2) allowed nine hits and three runs to the Bluefish. He walked two and struck out four while throwing 133 pitches. The right-hander from Oregon gave way to Scott Patterson who fired a scoreless ninth.

The Barnstormers took control of the game in the top of the first against Robert Carson (5-2), a left-hander who blanked Lancaster with 12 strikeouts 20 days earlier.

Jerry Owens got the offense going with a single into left, and Yusuke Kajimoto followed with a walk. Kent Matthes doubled to the gap in left center to score both. Matthes took third on a deep fly out by Mike McDade and scored on Brian Cavazos-Galvez bloop single into center. Lance Zawadzki grounded a single through the left side to add to the inning. The pair executed a double steal, and Cavazos-Galvez scored on a wild throw into center.

The Barnstormers did not pick up another RBI hit until a three-run double by Charlie Cutler in the seventh. However, they continued to build the lead on run-producing outs. Derrick Pyles knocked home one with a force play grounder in the third. Kevin Rivers collected two sacrifice flies, and McDade had one.

By the time the night ended, every Barnstormer in the lineup had at least one of the 15 hits and had scored a run. All of that came despite four double plays turned by the Bridgeport defense.

The two clubs meet again on Friday. Lancaster will throw right-hander Joe Gardner (7-4) against lefty Mike Iannazzo (5-8).

NOTES: Boer was the first Lancaster starter to finish the seventh inning since Joe Gardner on July 28 and the first to last the eighth since Bryan Woodall on July 17...Owens has hit safely in 11 straight (22-for-45, .489) and reached base in 22 in a row (48-102, .471 OBP)...McDade has hit safely in seven straight and knocked in runs in five in a row...Rivers' sac flies were his first two of the season...Matthes started at third for the second straight game in the absence of Anderson Feliz and Luke Hughes...Cavazos-Galvez is 12-for-22 with nine RBI in Bridgeport.
