York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution were one out away from a tidy nine-inning victory, but again pulled it out the difficult way, winning 5-4 in 11 innings at Somerset in the opening game of a four-game series on Thursday night in front of 4,077 fans at TD Bank Ballpark. The win is the third straight for the Revs who improve to 26-20 in the second half, and stay within 2.5 games of Lancaster for first place.
Through 26 outs, the story of the night was starter Frank Gailey. Pitching on short rest and facing the same lineup for the second straight start, Gailey cruised for most of the night, coming within one out of finishing what he started. Back-to-back two-out singles by left-hand hitters Ricky Claudio and Nate Spears kept the game alive, however, prompting the Revs to call on reliever Luis Perdomo. Jonny Tucker further prolonged the contest with a one-hopper that glanced off shortstop Wilson Valdez' glove for an RBI single, bringing the winning run to the plate. Robert Andino very nearly won the game, as his deep drive to left-center smacked the outfield fence. It did result in a game-tying double, deadlocking things at 4-4. After an intentional walk, Perdomo retired Adam Donachie on a fielder's choice at third base to force extras.
After a scoreless 10th inning, the Revs had two outs and no base runners in the top of the 11th, but Mikey Reynolds kept the inning alive with a hard double down the left field line. Valdez then hit a bouncing ball to short, and Andino's throw sailed wide at first, allowing Reynolds to come home with the eventual winning run. It marked the second straight night that the Revs plated their winning run in extra innings on a throwing error.
Beau Vaughan allowed a two-out infield hit to Tucker, but struck out Andino to bring the game to a close, notching his first save of the season. Reliever Ron Schreurs (3-0) picked up the win with a perfect 10th.
Gailey was saddled with a no-decision after a brilliant 126-pitch effort. Aiding a thinly-stretched bullpen, the longtime reliever's 8.2 innings surpassed his previous career-high of seven innings set twice this season. Incredibly, it was his fourth straight no-decision in a game that York won in extra innings. The Revs have won each of his last five starts.
The Revs struck first with a run in the third inning as Reynolds tripled to right-center and scored on Valdez' groundout to short for a 1-0 lead.
Somerset answered in their half of the third with a two-out RBI single to center by Aharon Eggleston, tying the game at 1-1.
York went back in front an inning later. Andres Perez ripped a single to left with one out, and Bryan Pounds followed with a double to left-center. Perez attempted to score but was called out at the plate, with his argument resulting in an ejection. Yeicok Calderon picked him up with a two-out RBI single to left, however, putting the Revs ahead 2-1.
Eric Patterson led off the sixth with a double to right-center, and Perez' replacement in the lineup, Telvin Nash nailed an RBI double to left on his first swing of the night, increasing the lead to 3-1.
The Revs added an insurance run in the ninth as Pounds walked, Calderon singled, and Luis De La Cruz reached on a bunt hit to load the bases with no outs. With one out, Reynolds chopped a grounder that Spears was unable to handle, with a run scoring on the error to make it 4-1.
Notes: While the nine-inning victory did not come to fruition, the Revs continue to shatter club records for extra innings, playing in their 15th extra-inning game of the season (previous record was 11) and winning their ninth game in extras (previous record was five victories). Of the 15 extra-inning games, 12 have lasted 11 innings or longer. It also marked the seventh time in the last 15 games that the Revs have played extras, and the third time in the last five. The Revs have now won four consecutive extra-inning contests in the last 10 days alone. The Revs improve to 20-12 in their last 32 games. Perez extended his hitting streak to a season-high nine games, while Pounds' streak reached eight. Vaughan has not allowed an earned run in 16.0 innings over his last 14 appearances. York is six games over .500 for the first time this season. The Revs improve to 19-11 in games decided in a team's final at-bat. Newly-signed righty Cody Scarpetta (1-4, 3.76) makes his Revs debut on Friday night after pitching with Bridgeport earlier this season. Somerset counters with right-hander R.J. Seidel (2-4, 3.09). Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile apps beginning at 6:45 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
