Year End Honors Announced

Elmira, NY- With wins over Reading and Dayton this week to close out the 2008-2009 regular season, the Elmira Jackals have stamped their pass to the post season and Kelly Cup Playoffs. Before Thursday nights 6-5 win over Dayton, the following honors were awarded to these Jackals.

Most Valuable Player: Elmira net minder Michael Teslak was named the Most Valuable Player after turning in a 17-10-1-3 record on the season. Teslak has been Elmira's work horse getting the start in all but one of the Jackals last 16 games. The Fernie, British Columbia product was the main pillar in Elmira's post season birth turning in a 7-3-2 record in the month of March. Teslak finishes the regular season with a 0.904 save percentage and a 2.87 goals against average.

Leading Scorer Award: Pierre-Luc Faubert finishes the 2008-2009 campaign as Elmira's Leading Scorer with 24 goals and 33 assists for 57 points in 70 games played. The Rigaud, Quebec native ranked in the top five on the club for plus minus rating at +10 and contributed four power play goals and two shorthanded tallies.

Rookie of the Year: Defenseman Wes Cunningham was named the Rookie of the Year after finishing ninth in scoring for all defensemen in the ECHL and second for rookie defenseman with 10 goals and 28 assists for 38 points. The Dresden, Ontario product ranks sixth in scoring for the Jackals while turning in a plus three rating and 63 minutes in penalties. Cunningham, known for his monster hip checks, shows big promise for an outstanding professional hockey career.

Top Defenseman: Travis Gawryletz was awarded the trophy for Top Defensive Player. The Trail, British Columbia product netted two goals and added 14 assists for 16 points coming in 56 games played. Gawryletz wasn't caught many times making mistakes in his rookie campaign as he turned in a plus 14 rating on the season while only spending 40 minutes in the penalty box.

Most Improved Player: Rookie defenseman Guillaume Lepine was named this seasons Most Improved Player. The Montreal, Quebec product carried a heavy work load in his first season playing the role of "Heavy Weight". Lepine registered 18 fights on the year, an ECHL high for defenseman. Along with rumbling all the "Tough Guys", Lepine netted one goal and added seven assists while producing an impressive plus 10 rating.

Fan Favorite: While leading the team in scoring, Pierre-Luc Faubert was voted this seasons Fan Favorite. Not only did Pierre-Luc net 24 goals and add 33 assists, he led the team in games played with 70. The hard work and on ice leadership of this forward had the fans on their feet all season long.

Community Service Award: As a recognizable figure in the Jackals Organization as one of the top forwards, Benoit Doucet was also honored with the Community Service Award for his time spent in the community. The left winger who registered 43 points this season, was seen in the community at nearly every Jackals appearance. Doucet exemplifies great character and sportsmanship and is a role model not only on the ice but off the ice as well.
