June 20, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Staten Island Yankees News Release
Baseball is back at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George, and it came back with a bang. In front a record-crowd of 7,483 fans, the Brooklyn Cyclones (1-0) took the first game of the 2015 edition of the Battle of the Boroughs 3-2 in 12 innings.
The outlook seemed great at the start for Staten Island (0-1) with newly-drafted Jhalan Jackson smashing a two-run homer to left field in the second inning, putting the Baby Bombers ahead, 2-0.
Brooklyn responded in the top of the fourth inning when Cyclones center fielder Tucker Tharp drove in Pedro Perez with a double to right field, cutting the score to 2-1.
The Cyclones went on to tie the game in the sixth inning as Yankees reliever Yoel Espinal walked Brooklyn's Michael Katz, followed by two wild pitches that allowed Katz to tie the game, 2-2.
Pitching for both sides held strong, carrying the game in extra innings, highlighted by Travis Hissong tossing 2.1 innings, allowing only one hit, striking out five batters.
With Sean Carley (0-1) on the mound, the Cyclones' Emmanuel Zabala drew a walk, then moved to second on a Vincent Siena sacrifice bunt. Brooklyn's execution paid off as Michael Bernal singled to left field, giving the game its final score of 3-2.
Staten Island and Brooklyn face off again tomorrow night at MCU Park. The Battle of the Boroughs will be back in Staten Island on Sunday at 4 p.m. for Fathers' Day.
