Lowell Spinners News Release
BURLINGTON, VT - The Lowell Spinners continued their hot start to the 2015 season Saturday evening, capitalizing on a five-run seventh inning to cruise to their second straight win to open the season, topping the Vermont Lake Monsters, 7-1, at Centennial Field.
Vermont (0-2) got on the board first in the second inning, taking advantage of a bit of wildness from starter Danny Rosenbaum. With two outs, a pair of wild pitches sandwiched around a walk brought home the game's first run to stake the Lake Monsters to a 1-0 lead.
Lowell (2-0) would pull even in the fourth inning, taking advantage of a leadoff walk by Bryan Hudson. Jeremy Rivera followed with his second base hit of the game, giving the Spinners runners on the corners with no outs. A one-out sacrifice fly by Tucker Tubbs would even the score at one but the Spinners could do no further damage.
The Spinners would break things open in the seventh inning with a five-run inning to take a 6-1 lead. The first five batters of the inning would reach base, highlighted by run-scoring singles by Mitch Gunsolus and Jordon Austin. A two-run single by Hudson would push the lead to five runs before Vermont would escape the inning.
The Lake Monsters would threaten in the eighth inning after Daniel Gonzalez loaded the bases with two out. However after a mound visit from Lance Carter, Gonzalez battened down the hatches and got Seong-min Kim to line-out to end the inning.
Rivera led the way for the Spinners offense, reaching base four times on three hits and a walk. He had an RBI double and stolen base. Hudson added a two RBI night and stolen base of his own, while Austin added a two hit night, scoring a pair of runs and adding an RBI.
Three players made their professional debut with Tubbs going 1-for-2 with an RBI and run scored, while Gunsolus added an RBI as part of a 1-for-3 game. Chad De La Guerra went hitless in his first professional game.
Rosenbaum, making his first official appearance since undergoing Tommy John surgery last season, went the first four innings, allowing one run on two hits and two walks. He struck out a pair. Gonzalez (1-0, 0.00) made his first state-side appearance after earning Latin Program Pitcher of the Year honors in 2014 and impressed with five scoreless innings to earn the win. He allowed three hits and walked three, striking out four, including Trace Loehr to end the game.
The Spinners go for the series opening sweep Sunday when Jake Cosart (NR) gets the ball for a 5:05 first pitch.
