Auburn Doubledays News Release
BATAVIA, NY - The Doubledays took an early lead in the first, and never looked back. Auburn has now won 6 straight Opening Day games against Batavia, and nine of the last 11.
In the first inning, Bryan Mejia led off the season with a double to deep left field. After he was tagged out at third on a fielder's choice by Clay Williamson, Matthew Page walked and David Kerian singled into left to score Williamson. From that point on, the Doubledays cruised to a 10-0 Opening Day victory.
Auburn added another run in the second on a triple by Edwin Lora, the first of his professional career. After a scoreless third, and one of just three one-two-three innings for the Doubledays, Auburn struck for a trio in the fourth.
With two outs and runners on second and third, Lora hit a soft grounder to the mound. Gabriel Castellanos, the Muckdogs' starting pitcher, fielded the ball and threw it past Eric Fisher, Batavia's first baseman. The error scored Jakson Reetz and Kelvin Gutierrez. Lora then came around to score on the second double of the day by Bryan Mejia a batter latter.
An innning later in the fifth, Auburn added two more on four singles. After a scoreless sixth, the Doubledays put another three on the board thanks to two singles and an error in the seventh. In the eighth and ninth, all six Auburn hitters were retired in order.
The best part about the Doubledays' offense was that all 10 runs came with two outs. As a result, only four of the 10 runs given up by Batavia's four pitchers were earned.
On the other side of the ball, Auburn used three pitchers. Robbie Dickey started on the mound and threw three shutout innings. He gave up just two hits while walking two and striking out three. The best performance of the day came from Luis Torres, who took home the win. The righty threw five hitless innings, while walking one and striking out three more. Torres went through a stretch where he retired nine straight. Joey Webb sealed the victory for the Doubledays with a scoreless ninth where he walked one and struck out another.
Overall, it was great team effort by Auburn who once again scored all 10 of their runs with two outs. Thanks to great pitching and clutch hitting, the Doubledays moved to 1-0 for the sixth connsecutive season with wins over the Muckdogs every time.
Tonight's game starts at 7:05. Nick White, a right handed pitcher out of Oklahoma gets the start for Batavia. It will be his first start in his career for the Muckdogs. Jefry Rodriguez takes the mound for Auburn. Rodriguez had a 2.76 over three starts for the Doubledays last year.
