Yan Gomes Homers But Fisher Cats Fall 3-2

New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release


(Manchester, NH)-Yan Gomes went 2-for-3 and hit his second home run in three days, but Portland edged the Fisher Cats 3-2 before 7,522 on Saturday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

Joel Carreno worked six innings, allowing one run on six hits. He walked two and struck out six in a solid start for the Fisher Cats.

Portland (40-59) broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the eighth inning when Chih-Hsien Chiang doubled and Will Middlebrooks homered off losing pitcher Yohan Pino (2-5).

The game was scoreless until the fifth inning. Tim Federowicz singled and Mitch Dening beat out a bunt single. After Carreno retired Oscar Tejeda and Ryan Dent, Heiker Meneses singled to load the bases and Ryan Khoury followed with a single to right to put the Sea Dogs up 1-0.

The Fisher Cats (55-44) tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on a solo home run by Gomes, his seventh of the season.

New Hampshire cut the lead to 3-2 with back-to-back doubles by Jonathan Diaz and Craig Stansberry in the bottom of the eighth inning to make it 3-2, but they couldn't cash in on back-to-back singles in the bottom of the ninth inning off winning pitcher Blake Maxwell (3-2).

Mike McDade (1-for-4) matched a franchise record with his 35th double of the season in the fourth inning. He is currently tied for the Eastern League lead with Portland's Chiang.
