Y'alls Fall in Hit Marathon
May 10, 2024 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
FLORENCE, KY - The Florence Y'alls (1-1), presented by Towne Properties, left Friday night's 13-7 loss to the Québec Capitales (1-1) with the theme of the game revolving around runners left on base. Florence stranded 12 baserunners through the game, leaving eight in scoring position. The Y'alls left runners on the bases in all but the three innings in which they were retired in order.
This was not a bad game by any measure as the bats showed up in a grand way. The Y'alls outpaced the Capitales in the hit department 14-10 for the second-straight game.
Florence cobbled together three multi-run innings with a pair of runs in each of the first, third, and fourth innings. The 2-3-4-5 hitters were the strongest part of the order with first baseman Craig Massey, second baseman Brian Fuentes, left fielder Hank Zeisler, and designated hitter Zade Richardson each earning multi-hit games. Massey wrapped up a 3-for-5 showing with a trio of runs scored. Fuentes went 2-for-4 with one RBI, two runs, and a walk. Zeisler also jumped through with a 2-for-4 line boosted by a pair of doubles and an RBI. Richardson celebrated his 24th birthday with three RBIs and a run scored on a 2-for-5 night. That brings the birthday boy's season total to 10 runs batted in, a Frontier League best.
A string of poorly timed errors made things difficult in the late innings, as well, as the defense committed four gaffes in the final three frames.
Starting pitcher Blake Loubier looked strong through the first couple innings, but his five-run third cast a shadow on the outing. Loubier finished with seven earned runs through four innings, accompanied by five hits, four walks, four strikeouts, and a pair of home runs.
Pitcher Josh Hudgins followed up with a pair of shutout frames before surrendering three straight hits to begin the seventh resulting in a pair of runs. Hudgins walked away with two runs, one earned, in three innings of work with three hits, two walks, and two strikeouts. Gunnar Groen hopped onto the mound after him and struggled, surrendering four runs on two hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts. Ross Thompson finished the game for Florence with a beautiful top of the ninth, walking one and striking out another in the four-batter frame.
The Y'alls and the Capitales will find the series winner Saturday night after splitting the first two.
