St. Paul, MN - The Sioux City Explorers take game one of the doubleheader in St. Paul, scoring eight runs to get the 8-6 victory over the Saints in seven innings at CHS Field.
St. Paul scored first in game one of the doubleheader, plating a quick run off a solo homer by Saints first baseman Angelo Songco in the second inning.
In the top of the fourth, X's scored their first run. X's first baseman Noah Perio led-off with a single, moved to second on a base-hit, advanced to third off a sacrifice, and scored on a 6-5 fielder's choice by Jarek Cunningham.
The Saints answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth, retaking the lead 2-1. With the bases loaded, St. Paul's catcher Tony Caldwell worked up a bases-loaded walk to score the runner from third base.
Explorers tied it in the fifth inning. Tim Colwell led-off with a walk, advanced all the way to third base on an error by the catcher, and scored on a 3-4-6 fielder's choice hit by X's left-fielder Derrick Robinson.
Sioux City's offense took fire in the top of the sixth. X's centerfielder Matty Johnson knocked in the go-ahead run at second base with an RBI double. Another double by the X's squad (Tim Colwell) plated the second run in the inning. An RBI single by Ralph Henriquez extended their lead to three runs. X's right-fielder Michael Lang kept the carousel moving, scoring an additional two runs with the third RBI double of the inning. Sioux City finished the scoring spree with a Noah Perio RBI single, adding one more to their already substantial 8-2 lead.
The St. Paul Saints managed to score three more runs with a solo-shot (Tony Caldwell) and two-run homer (Tony Thomas) in the bottom of the seventh, but would not be able to overcome their deficit to Sioux City. Final score, Explorers 8, Saints 6 in seven innings at CHS Field.
Explorers starter Dylan Rheault (1-0) received the win, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks in 3.2 innings pitched. X's closer Connor Overton (s-5) got the save for Sioux City, striking out the final batter of the seventh inning to clinch the victory.
