Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release

In the series opener of Fargo-Moorhead hosting Lincoln at Newman Outdoor Field which featured two different rain delays, four runs in the fifth inning by the road team turned out to be the difference-maker in a 6-3 win for them on Tuesday. Two doubles were hit in the inning by Curt Smith and Pat Kelly which provided the boost needed for the Saltdogs to take the game.

Jeff McKenzie took the hill as the starter for the Saltdogs and he delivered. The southpaw allowed a solo home run in the first, but it was smooth sailing for him from there with no more runs coming across while he was on the mound. He went six innings, yielded five hits, struck out five, and walked none. Ryan Pineda was the 'Hawks who hit the homer in the first, a screaming liner over the left field fence.

Dan Hennigan scored a run in the first and drove Pat Kelly in the second to give the Saltdogs a 2-1 edge early. The fifth is when the game really started to unravel. Hennigan led off with a walk and then scored on Smith's double. Jon Smith then drove Curt Smith in with a single. Kelly crushed a double which scored two and stretched the lead to 6-1.

The 'Hawks couldn't get any offense going until the seventh. Luke Bailey led off with a double, then scored on an RBI by Bryan Johns. In the eighth Keury De La Cruz scored on a triple by K.D. Kang off the left field wall. Unfortunately they couldn't muster up any more offense when Evan Reed came in for the Saltdogs and earned his sixth save of the year.

McKenzie (1-2) got his first win of the season and Charlie Shirek (0-1) lost his debut for F-M. Game two of the series will be Wednesday at Newman Outdoor Field, slated for a 7:02 p.m. start.
