Texas AirHogs News Release

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Canada - The AirHogs dropped their opener in Winnipeg Tuesday 5-3 to the Goldeyes. The home side used a strong bullpen performance and a 3-run 7th inning to take Game 1 of the 3-game set.

The Goldeyes tagged AirHogs starter Matt Shepherd for an early run in the bottom of the 3rd on an RBI double by Josh Romanski that scored Maikol Gonzalez. But the AirHogs were ready to respond quickly. After leaving 4 on base (3 in scoring position) over the 1st 3 innings, the team broke through against Winnipeg starter Kyle Anderson on a 3-run home run by Will DuPont with 2 outs in the 4th. The blast was the 2nd of the season for DuPont.

Jacob Rogers would take Shepherd deep for a solo blast in the 4th, but, with the help of 3 double plays, Shepherd was able to preserve the 3-2 lead all the way to the bottom of the 7th.

When Anderson, who surrendered a season-high 10 hits, was chased from the game in the top of the 5th, the Goldeyes bullpen, starting with Zach Dando, took over, and the relief corps would not surrender a hit or run the rest of the way. 4 relievers held the AirHogs scoreless to give them a chance to take a late lead.

The Goldeyes were able to seize that lead in the bottom of the 7th on a 2-out, 2-RBI double by Maikol Gonzalez to drive Shepherd from the game. David Rohm added an RBI single off Tyler Ihrig to make it 5-3.

The AirHogs could not muster a comeback effort in the 9th and failed to reach against closer Jailen Peguero, who picked up his 5th save. Conor Spink, who threw a scoreless top of the 7th in relief of Dando, got his 1st win, while Shepherd took his 3rd loss.

The AirHogs (10-15) and the Goldeyes (14-11) battle again tomorrow at 7:05 before closing the series Thursday at 11 am. RHP Cody Hebner is expected to start tomorrow for the AirHogs.

A live radio broadcast will be available at mixlr.com/TXAirHogs.
