X's lose in 13 innings to Saints

Extra innings were not kind to the Explorers on Wednesday night as St. Paul scores 3 times in the top of the 13th and Sioux City loses their 6th game in 7 tries this season 6-3 in a 4 hour 24 minute ball game at Lewis & Clark Park.

The X's scored first in the 3rd with Sam Walker on third and 2 outs when Saints starter Justin Lord uncorked a wild pitch to Nick McCoola scoring Walker.

St. Paul answered in the 4th when Jason Colson drilled a RBI single off Nick Singleton scoring Brent Krause.

Sioux City took back the lead in the 5th when a ground ball by McCoola was fielded cleanly by 2B Julius Thames but his throw was wild, scoring Jorge Rodriquez to make it 2-1.

The Saints, once again, tied it. In the 6th, Thames accounted for his error on a RBI single scoring Kevin Sullivan and it was all square at 2-2.

The X's again took the lead in the bottom of the 6th when Walker battled Lord in a full count with 1 out and Alex Llanos on third and Pete Pirman on second. Walker got a fly ball to deep left to score Llanos. Pirman was safe on a close play at 3rd.

However, Sioux City couldn't hold the lead as Cameron Cheek ran into trouble in the 8th on a leadoff walk to Sullivan and then Tim Brown drilled a double to center, scoring the Saints catcher, tying the game at 3-3. The Saints had a great chance to score again in the 8th but Scooter Jordan bounced into an inning ending double play on a close play at first. It was just his 14 GIDP in his career in 1477 AB.

The X's had a chance to win in the bottom of the 9th. With 1 out, Jason Tuttle reached on an infield single off reliever Craig Moldrem. Tuttle would steal 2nd and McCoola would walk bringing up Chris Grossman. The X's C would hit a line shot to first but 1B Brown made an incredible catch, sitting on the dirt on his shoelaces to rob Grossman of a sure game ending hit. Tuttle was doubled off 2nd to end the inning.

Sioux City would never get another base runner in the game. St. Paul - after threatening in the 10th and 11th - finally got 3 runs in the top of the 13th on a RBI single by Marcel Longmire and a 2-run double by Colson. The X's would be retired in order 12 times in extra innings and fell to 1-6 on the season, losing 6-3.

The finale to the 3-game series is Thursday night at Lewis & Clark Park. Paul Fagan goes for the Explorers. Charlie Ruud gets the start for the Saints. It's a Thirsty Thursday with 1 dollar 12 ounce Coors Lights and Pepsis. Game time is 7:05. Tickets available by calling 277-WINS.
