Diablos edge the Wingnuts 8-6

El Paso Diablos News Release


The El Paso Diablos overcame a four-run deficit and defeated the Wichita Wingnuts 8-6 on Wednesday afternoon from Cohen Stadium.

The Wingnuts scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning. Heath Keel reached second base on a fielding error by the Diablos. Keel moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI ground out by Stephen Pearson for the 1-0 lead.

The Diablos bounced back in the bottom of the second inning. Alex Derhak smashed an RBI double off the left field wall, knotting the score at 1-1.

El Paso took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Matt Kent had a run-scoring single in the frame as the Diablos took a 2-1 lead. The Wingnuts with two runners on, turned a 5-4-3 triple play off the bat of Alex Derhak, the second in league history.

The Wingnuts carried the momentum of the historic feat into the fifth inning. The Wingnuts plated five runs, aided by three Diablos errors in the inning. Wichita had five singles in the frame, as they took a 6-2 advantage.

El Paso had an explosive bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead. The Diablos belted out six hits in the frame, including an RBI double by Walter Olmstead and a two-RBI single by Stantrel Smith to take the 7-6 edge.

The Diablos got some insurance in the bottom of the eighth inning. Stantrel Smith poked an RBI single to left field scoring Alex Derhak from second base for the 8-6 advantage.

Chris Thompson threw a scoreless ninth for his third save of the season.

Josh Neitz (1-1) picks up the victory, he tossed six full allowing one earned run off of seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Dan Caldwell (0-1) picks up the loss, he didn't retire a batter in the sixth inning, and allowed four earned runs off of four hits.

Jason Vecchio and Jimmy Holm each threw a scoreless frame of relief.

The Diablos will close out their three game home series against Wichita on Thursday night at 7:05 PM from Cohen Stadium. Beau Hintz will get the nod against Leonard Landeros. The game will be broadcast live at www.diablos.com with Jon Barr on the call.
