Chesapeake Baysox News Release

The Bowie Baysox defeated the Trenton Thunder 4-2 Tuesday night at Waterfront Park, pulling their season record to 65-56 as the Eastern League pennant race comes down the stretch. Newcomer Xavier Avery took center stage in defeating the league's top team, as the outfielder drove in all four runs with a pair of doubles in his best performance since promotion to Double-A on Aug. 10.

Starting pitcher Pedro Viola tossed 5.0 innings with two runs on four hits, and right-hander Ryohei Tanaka claimed the win one hit in a shutout sixth inning. Chad Thall and Brandon Cooney held the Thunder off before Eastern League All-Star Pedro Beato slamed the door in the ninth inning for his 14th save of the season.

The game featured the first-ever matchup between Baysox catcher Caleb Joseph and Thunder second baseman Corban Joseph, brothers from Tennessee drafted by the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees, respectively, in 2008. Caleb seized the first opportunity for bragging rights with the win as he went 3-for-4 and scored two runs, besting his younger brother's 1-for-4 line.

Bowie took a one-run lead in the top of the third inning, as Joseph singled to center field and advanced to second base on shortstop Greg Miclat's groundout. Avery drove Joseph in with a double to right field, his first hit of the night.

The Thunder pulled even in the bottom of the fourth inning by manufacturing a run after Viola walked leadoff hitter Justin Christian. Christian stole second base with outfielder Austin Krum at the plate, and took third when Krum grounded out to Carlos Rojas at second base. Another groundout plated Krum to tie the game at 1-1 as Daniel Brewer sent a ball to first base.

Trenton took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, which first baseman Marcos Vechionacci opened with a single to right field. Two outs later, Matthew Cusick put runners on the corners single to right field. Vechionacci scored on a wild pitch with Christian batting to take a 2-1 lead before Christian lined out to Rojas to end the inning.

The Baysox battled back in the top of the seventh inning and mounted a two-out rally that began with Joseph's single to left field. Miclat hit a potential double play ground ball to shortstop, where Trenton's Luis Nunez botched the play, allowing Miclat and Joseph to reach first and second base safely. Rojas drew a walk before Avery hit his second double of the night, clearing the bases for a 4-2 Baysox lead. Avery drove in four runs in a game for the first time of his professional career, and the 20-year-old knocked two doubles for the second time this season.

Bowie nearly added an insurance run in the eighth inning when right fielder Joel Guzman hit a one-out double down the third-base line and was replaced by Jonathan Tucker as a pinch runner. Tucker held at second on first baseman Joe Mahoney's groundout, but went for glory on designated hitter Brandon Waring's single to left field and was cut down at the plate on left fielder Damon Sublett's hard throw to the catcher.

Beato was sterling in the final inning, and retired Brewer, Austin Romine and Joseph in order to record his team-leading 14th save of the year.

The Baysox remain in second place in the Eastern League's Western division. Their win, combined with Harrisburg's loss and Akron's split doubleheader, leaves Bowie 2.0 games ahead of Harrisburg and Akron for the division's final playoff spot. The Baysox trail first-place Altoona by 5.0 games.

Bowie and Trenton resume the final leg of their season series Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. and wrap it up Thursday. The Baysox return home Friday, as Richmond and Akron come to Bowie for a six-game home stand. That home stand includes Fairy Tale Night on Wednesday, Aug. 21, with kids' favorite fairy tale characters available for a meet-and-greet before the game.
