Cohoon Clips Fisher Cats, B-Mets Even Series, 3-1

Mark Cohoon pitched his way to a second straight quality start, limiting New Hampshire to two runs over six-plus innings in Binghamton's 5-2 win at Merchantsauto.com Stadium Wednesday night. Jon Malo enjoyed a 2-for-3 showing, scored two runs and drove in two.

The Fisher Cats latched control of the game in the third inning with a run off Cohoon. Callix Crabbe led off with a single. Jonathan Diaz sacrificed him to second. After Cohoon walked Darin Mastroianni, Crabbe took off for third and Mastroianni followed on a double steal. Now, with runners at second and third, Adeiny Hechavarria lifted a sac fly to deep center, scoring Crabbe to put New Hampshire ahead 1-0.

Binghamton (59-62) responded in the fourth against starter Zach Stewart. Malo drew a one out walk and promptly moved to second on a balk. After Josh Satin struck out, Marshall Hubbard lined a single to left to even the score at one.

Brahiam Maldonado gave the B-Mets the lead for good in the fifth. Stewart got the first two hitters without any trouble but caught too much of the plate on an 0-1 offering, which Maldonado clubbed out of the yard to left-center for his ninth homer of the season, vaulting Binghamton into the lead, 2-1.

The B-Mets added to their advantage in the sixth. Malo reached with a leadoff single to left. He then swiped second for his sixth stolen base of the season. After Satin struck out, Hubbard laced an infield single up the middle to advance Malo to third, knocking Stewart out of the game. Danny Farquhar replaced the starter. On the first pitch Farquhar threw, Zach Lutz hit a slow roller to second, plating Malo to up the lead to two, 3-1.

Malo put the finishing touches on his night in the seventh. With runners at second and third and two outs, he laced a single into left-center off Alan Farina to plate Coronado and Eric Cambell, who had walked and doubled, respectively, giving Binghamton its largest lead, 5-1.

New Hampshire (70-52) closed the gap to three in the bottom of the frame and chased Cohoon in the process. The southpaw allowed back-to-back singles to Adam Calderone and David Cooper starting the frame, resulting in his departure. Manuel Alvarez entered and got Matt Liuzza to fly out to shallow center for the first out. However, Crabbe got the better of him with an RBI double to left, plating Calderone to trim the lead to 5-2. Alvarez would retire the next two hitters, though, stranding two runners.

Alvarez worked the eighth in scoreless fashion to segue to Roy Merritt, who tossed the ninth, securing his eighth save in 10 chances.

Cohoon earned his third win with the solid start. He limited the Fisher Cats to seven hits and struck out five.

Stewart was charged with his third loss. The right-hander permitted three runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings and struck out six.

Coronado led all hitters with a 3-for-4 performance, his second three-hit game of the year, and Satin and Maldonado both extended their hitting streaks to nine games.

Binghamton will try for its second straight series win Thursday at 7:05 PM in the rubber match of the three-game set. RHP Jenrry Mejia (0-0, 2.70) will start opposite RHP Rey Gonzalez (2-3, 6.90) of New Hampshire.
