Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

RICHMOND, VA - New Britain righty Chris Province carried a perfect-game bid into the seventh inning, as the Rock Cats stymied the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 3-1, in the middle game of a three-game series on Wednesday night at New Britain Stadium.

Province was in control from the outset, setting aside the first 19 batters that he faced. He induced 13 ground ball outs during that stretch, recording the first out in the seventh inning before his bid was ended by a Brad Boyer single through the right-side of the infield.

New Britain got on the board first against Squirrels' right-hander Mike MacDonald in the second inning. MacDonald hit Steve Singleton to start the inning, and Jair Fernandez followed with a two-run home run to left-center field. Fernandez's fourth blast of the year put New Britain out in front, 2-0.

The Rock Cats added a run to their lead against MacDonald in the fifth, when Mark Dolenc singled to start the inning. He advanced to second on a groundout and stole third base. With the infield drawn in, Estarlin de los Santos sent a grounder to the shortstop, Ryan Lormand. Lormand played the ball cleanly and came home, but Tyler La Torre dropped the ball attempting to tag Dolenc and the Rock Cats led, 3-0. There was no error charged on the play.

The first Squirrels' hit against Province also sparked their first rally. Thomas Neal followed Boyer's single and roped a double to the alley in left-center field, plating Boyer and trimming the New Britain advantage to 3-1.

Province (6-5) retired after 6 2/3 innings. He allowed just the lone run on two hits, walking none and striking out one. He needed just 66 pitches to record 20 outs, as he earned his sixth win of the season. He received two standing-ovations for the New Britain Stadium crowd, the first coming after Boyer's single broke up his perfect-game bid in the seventh, and the other coming upon his departure from the ballgame.

MacDonald (4-8) lasted seven innings, but endured a hard-luck loss. He allowed three earned runs on four hits, walked none and struck out six. It marked the third consecutive quality start for MacDonald, although he fell for the eighth time on the year.

Right-hander Carlos Gutierrez worked the final 2 1/3 innings for his second save of the season. Right-hander Adrian Martin made his Giants' organizational debut, working a scoreless eighth inning for the Squirrels.

The finale of the three-game series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Thursday night at New Britain Stadium. LHP Clayton Tanner (8-8, 3.25) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Deolis Guerra (2-9, 5.99) for New Britain.
