Chesapeake Baysox News Release

TRENTON, N.J. - A sparkling performance by Trenton right-hander Adam Warren confounded the Bowie Baysox as they fell 3-0 at Waterfront Park Wednesday. Warren broke a Thunder franchise record as he struck out 15 Baysox batters through 7.0 shutout innings with two hits and one walk.

The Baysox have had recent troubles with strikeouts, breaking their previous season high by striking out 15 times last Friday in Erie. They broke that new mark Sunday in their series finale with the SeaWolves with 16 strikeouts before finishing Wednesday's game with 17 strikeouts.

Warren's display spoiled a quality start by Baysox lefty Rick Zagone, who gave up two runs on four hits through 6.0 innings. Zagone has been a frequent hard-luck loser since his promotion to Double-A, tossing seven quality starts in his 10 appearances, but carrying a 3-5 record.

Bowie's top hitters continued to struggle, as second baseman Ryan Adams, designated hitter Tyler Henson, first baseman Joel Guzman and left fielder Joe Mahoney have combined to go 1-for-29 in the Baysox last two games.

Trenton's leadoff hitter Justin Christian scored the game's opening run in the bottom of the first inning after drawing a walk. With right-fielder Daniel Brewer batting, Christian stole second base, and scored on Brewer's single up the middle.

Baysox center fielder Xavier Avery, who drove in all four runs Tuesday in Bowie's 4-2 win over Trenton, was nearly a one-man rally in the top of the fourth inning. He hit a leadoff single to left field, Bowie's first hit of the game, and stole second with Henson batting before stealing third as Henson struck out for the second out. Avery was unable to turn his clever base-running into a run as Warren rang up Guzman for yet another strikeout to escape the inning.

Christian returned to score Trenton's second run in the bottom of the sixth inning, which he led off with a double down the third-base line. He moved to third on a groundout, and scored on Austin Romine's double to left field.

The Thunder capped off their scoring in the seventh inning, against reliever Sean Gleason. Trenton third baseman Matt Cusick hit a one-out single to left field and moved to second base on Luis Nunez's single. Christian burned the Baysox once again with a double to right field that sent Cusick across the plate for a 3-0 Trenton lead. Gleason escaped further damage when Brewer flied out to Avery, who whipped the ball to Waring at third in time to catch Christian for a double play after he had tagged up. Game officials ruled that Christian was out before Nunez crossed home, preventing a fourth run from scoring. Thunder manager Tony Franklin disagreed strongly enough that he received his marching orders from home plate umpire Joel Hospodka.

The Baysox did not manage a hit after the fifth inning, and fell to 65-57 with the loss. They remain in second place in the Eastern League's Western Division, 6.0 games behind first-place Altoona and a game ahead of third-place Harrisburg for the final playoff spot.

Bowie and Trenton play the final game of their season series Thursday at 7:05 p.m. The Baysox return home Friday, as Richmond and Akron come to Bowie for a seven-game home stand with a doubleheader on Monday, Aug. 23. That home stand includes Fairy Tale Night on Wednesday, Aug. 21, with kids' favorite fairy tale characters available for a meet-and-greet before the game. Fans can also catch the Baysox for a record-low price of one dollar on Wednesday, Aug. 25 with a coupon that can be printed out from Baysox.com.
