Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Charleston, WV - The West Virginia Power topped the Columbia Fireflies 7-6 in 10 innings on Tuesday night at Spirit Communications Park. The Power built a 6-0 lead, but were forced to win the game with a run in the top half of the tenth in the series opener.
Logan Hill gave West Virginia a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. After Casey Hughston doubled off Fireflies starter Kevin Canelon to lead off the game, Hill drove a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall for his tenth home run of the season. The Power added one run in the second when Logan Ratledge doubled in Jordan George for a 3-0 edge.
West Virginia continued to expand the lead in each of the next three innings. Stephen Alemais doubled in Mitchell Tolman for a 4-0 lead in the top of the third. Ratledge doubled home John Bormann in the fifth and a Daniel Arribas two-base hit in the fifth extended the lead to 6-0.
Taylor Hearn started for the Power, struck out six over four shutout innings and would not factor in the decision. The Fireflies tied the game in the fifth, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring six runs on four hits and four walks against two Power pitchers. Pat Mazeika and Dash Winningham each plated two runs with base hits and Luis Ortega singled in the game's tying run.
Neither club scored over the final four innings. Columbia's Nicco Blank and Seth Davis held West Virginia scoreless from the sixth through ninth innings, combining to allow only three hits. Scooter Hightower pitched four shutout frames for West Virginia.
In the top of the tenth, Arribas doubled and advanced to third on a sac bunt. George singled up the middle on a drawn-in infield to plate Arribas for a 7-6 Power advantage.
Hightower (1-0) earned the win in his South Atlantic League debut and Cesilio Pimentel pitched a perfect tenth for his fifth save. Tyler Bashlor (3-2) took the loss for Columbia.
Eight of the nine West Virginia batters had at least one hit and five had multi-hit efforts. Seven different players scored a run in the win. The club also matched a season high with seven doubles.
The Power and Fireflies meet for game two of this three game set on Wednesday night. Dario Agrazal and Luis De Los Santos will start for West Virginia and Columbia, respectively. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 P.M.
