Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston RiverDogs hope that Tuesday night's opener was no indication of what is to come for the Southern Division first half champs. In a highly anticipated potential South Atlantic League Championship preview, the RiverDogs were held to just three hits as they were handed a 2-0 loss by the Hagerstown Suns who became the first team in the league to reach 80 wins with a 2-0 win over Charleston in front of 4,116 on Tuesday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The RiverDogs (72-61, 30-34) have now welcomed 286,698 fans through the turnstiles at The Joe this year, 5,963 shy of the franchise record set last season with two home games remaining.

Hagerstown (80-54, 37-27)leapt out to an early advantage in the first when right fielder Rhett Wiseman ripped a two out, two-run shot to right field off of Daris Vargas (10-7, 2.70). After striking out Perkins looking to begin the ballgame, the Dominican righty yielded a single to Hagerstown DH Ian Sagdal to put runners on to set up Wiseman's 11th of the season. The runs were just the first two earned runs given up by Vargas in his last five starts spanning 27 innings.

Taylor Widener was superb in relief to keep the RiverDogs in the ballgame. The former Gamecock struck out four while yielding just four hits in four innings of work to lower his ERA to a 0.95 after a scoreless outing.

Charleston's best chance to score came in the seventh when catcher Luis Torrens led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a ball in the dirt, but three in a row were retired to keep the RiverDogs off the board.

Right-hander Joan Baez (8-7, 3.91) got the win for Hagerstown, tossing five innings allowing just two hits with four strikeouts while pitching around four walks.

Charleston center fielder Ricardo Ferreira collected the first hit for Charleston when he reached on an infield single to lead off the third to extend his hitting streak to a career-high ten games. The Dominican speedster is hitting .425 (17-40) over that span.

With the loss, the RiverDogs fall to 13-16 in the month of August, ensuring their first losing month of the season.
