Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Greenville Drive have put together an outstanding 2016 season on the field, and two Drive players have been recognized for their efforts, as outfielders Tate Matheny and Luis Alexander Basabe were selected to the South Atlantic League Annual All-Star Team, league president Eric Krupa announced Tuesday.
The All-Star Team is voted on by the Field Managers, General Managers, Sportswriters and Broadcasters of the 14 South Atlantic League teams.
Matheny and Basabe become the sixth and seventh Drive players to be selected to the league's Annual All-Star Team, joining second baseman Yoan Moncada (2015), utility infielder Carlos Asuaje (2014) and outfielders Keury De la Cruz (2012), Brandon Jacobs (2011) and Jeremy Hazelbaker (2010).
"We are extremely proud that Tate and Luis Alexander have been recognized as two of the South Atlantic League's best players," said Drive Manager Darren Fenster. "Both have had outstanding seasons for us and have been a huge part of our team's success here in 2016."
"Tate has been extremely consistent for us throughout the course of the year not just offensively, but also in the outfield as an above average defender. Conversely, Luis Alexander's first half was a bit of a struggle, and through his dedicated work he was able to turn his season into an incredibly productive one with the bat while playing an outstanding centerfield."
"Both of their overall seasons are a testament to their approach to their work and dedication to getting better every day, and they are very deserving of this honor."
Matheny was selected as an outfielder to the All-Star Team. In 99 games this season, Matheny leads the Drive with a .286 batting average and 112 hits. His 58 runs and 19 stolen bases rank second on the team, and he has hit 20 doubles and five homers while driving in 52 runs. He has also shined in the outfield, where he has posted 15 outfield assists, the fourth-highest total in the league.
Basabe, who was selected as a utility outfielder, leads the Drive with 24 stolen bases and 61 runs, and he has hit 12 homers with 103 hits, 24 doubles, eight triples and a .261 batting average. His season numbers have taken a nice boost in the second half, as he has a .299 average and a .360 on-base percentage in 51 games since the All-Star break.
"It is always an honor to see our players recognized among the best in the South Atlantic League, and we are very pleased to see Tate and Luis Alexander receive these deserved honors," said Drive General Manager Eric Jarinko. "We have enjoyed watching them patrol the Drive outfield this season, and we look forward to watching their continued development as they move through the system."
The Drive will begin their final week of the regular season with three games at Fluor Field against the Rome Braves starting on Tuesday night. To purchase tickets, go to the Main Street Box Office, call (864) 240-4528 or log on to GreenvilleDrive.com.
