LEADING OFF: The West Virginia Power won the rubber match of the three game series against the Lexington Legends 5-1 Wednesday night. The Power scored a pair in the first for the third straight day, on RBI base hits from Ke'Bryan Hayes and Carlos Munoz. After a Lexington run in the fourth, Daniel Arribas lined his seventh home run of the season in the sixth to put West Virginia up 3-1. The club added two insurance runs in the eighth on a fielder's choice and an error, and Seth McGarry shutout the Legends the final two frames to pick up his second save, securing the 5-1 victory.
ON THE FLY: Columbia comes to town for four games starting this evening. The Power and Fireflies have played two four-game series so far this season, on series in Charleston and the other in Columbia, with the home team taking three of four in each set. The Fireflies moved from Savannah during the off-season. The Power won the all-time series against the Sand Gnats 29-25.
MOVING ON: With a win Thursday night the Power can finish the month of June at an even .500 as they currently sit at 12-13. The team is hitting .259 with a staff ERA of 4.38 during the month. West Virginia finished April 15-7 with a .238 average and 2.56 ERA and ended May 12-17 with a .244 average and 4.18 ERA.
SOLO ACT: Daniel Arribas hit his eighth home run of the season Thursday night, all of which have been solo shots. The home run was the first baseman's fifth at Appalachian Power Park, where he is also batting .325 with a .436 on-base percentage and .535 slugging percentage.
WE HAVE LIFTOFF: Casey Hughston hit his fourth home run of the year Tuesday night and his second since returning to the club on June 16 from Extended Spring Training. The outfielder is hitting .293 with 8 RBI and a .488 slugging percentage in his second stint with the team this season.
RAT PACK: Logan Ratledge's four hit game Tuesday was the first of his professional career. The utility player has six hits over nine at bats in the series to raise his average from .227 to .264. Prior to Tuesday, his previous career-high was three hits in a single game, accomplished two weeks ago... against the Lexington Legends.
FUTURE IS NOW: Three former Power players were tabbed to play in the 2016 MLB Futures Game next month. Pitcher Dovydas Neverauskas (2014-15) and infielder Dilson Herrera (2013) will represent the World Squad and outfielder Austin Meadows (2014) will play for the U.S. squad. Former Wheeler Trevor Hoffman will manage the United States team in the July 10 game at Petco Park.
POWER POINTS: West Virginia is playing with an active roster of 24; no countermove has been made since Tito Polo was promoted to Bradenton on June 23... Mitchell Tolman had his second four hit game of the year Monday night, finishing 4-4 with three singles and his fourth home run of the season... Bret Helton is 2-0 against Columbia this season with a 0.82 ERA over two games and 1-5 against the rest of the league in 12 starts with a 4.53 ERA.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh throttled Seattle 8-1. Jameson Taillon earned the win and David Freese went yard to help the Buccos split the series... Indianapolis blanked Gwinnett 5-0. Frank Duncan worked seven innings and Josh Bell went 3-3... Altoona lost 13-4 to Binghamton with Brandon Waddell taking the loss... Jupiter edged Bradenton 6-2 in a bullpen start. Tate Scioneaux took the loss... The Black Bears snapped their six game slide with a 9-4 win over Batavia.
PROMO UPDATE: West Virginia continues its homestand tonight and the Power are focusing donation efforts on flood relief victims. The team will accept donations of dog food and bottled water to be distributed by the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association. The team will also offer several ways to make a financial donation benefiting the West Virginia Region of the American Red Cross, including $1.00 for every ticket sold during the homestand.
