PREVIEW: The Shorebirds open a four game set with the first half Northern Division Champion Hagerstown Suns. Hagerstown is the Class A Affiliate of the Washington Nationals. Delmarva went into the All-Star break as the hottest team in the league, but has struggled out of the gate in the second half. That being said, Delmarva has a chance to close June this evening with an 18-10 record if they take the series-opener. The Shorebirds lead the league with a 2.96 ERA on the year and a 2.34 ERA in the second half. The Suns lost two of their best players at the midway point, with outfielder Victor Robles and All-Star game MVP Max Schrock both earned promotions to the Potomac Nationals in the Carolina League. This is the first meeting between Delmarva and Hagerstown since April 17th, when the Shorebirds finished playing Hagerstown in eight of the first 11 games of the season. Since the Shorebirds opened the season with a 4-6 mark and lost two of the first three series, they have a series record of 13-4-2 over their last 19 sets, going 41-25 over that stretch.
TONIGHT'S OPPONENT: Right-hander Pedro Avila is a 19-year old Venezuelan-born pitcher. He makes his 28th professional appearance and his 27th career start tonight.
LAST GAME QUICK HITS: The Shorebirds dominated the Greensboro Grasshoppers in both games of a double-header. The 'Birds out-scored Greensboro 14-1 on the day as Reid Love and Cristian Alvarado over-powered all night. Alvarado fired a 1-hit complete game shutout in game two, matching Love's sixth win of the year in the first contest. The Shorebirds got four homers on the day, including two from Mercedes and one from Alex Murphy who continues to be among the league's elite power threats. The Shorebirds tied the season series at 8-8 with the sweep.
