Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
HICKORY, N.C. - Tyler Sullivan hit his second home run of the season, but it wasn't enough as Hickory topped Kannapolis, 7-3, on Thursday night at L.P. Frans Stadium in the first game of a 4-game set. The Intimidators (4-4 Second Half, 28-50) committed three errors on the night which aided the Crawdads' offense.
Hickory jumped in front with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Eric Jenkins led off with a triple then scored on a Josh Altman line drive that ricocheted off the foot of pitcher Johnathan Frebis for a double. Tyler Sanchez added a one-out base hit that cashed Altmann for a 2-0 lead. In the second inning, Ti'Quan Forbes doubled before Kannapolis committed two errors, helping the Crawdads double their lead to 4-0.
The Crawdads added three runs in the sixth, highlighted by Dylan Moore's 2-run home run (6), for a 7-0 advantage.
Wes Benjamin retired 13 straight Intimidators before allowing a leadoff single to Bradley Strong in the sixth. Sullivan followed with a 2-run home run (2) down the right field line to cut into the Crawdads' lead, 7-2. Benjamin (3-4) finished the night after 6.0 innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out a career-high eight batters for the second straight game to earn the win.
Kannapolis starter Johnathan Frebis (5-7) gave up seven runs (four earned) on nine hits over 5.0 innings. He struck out one and walked one while taking the loss for the Intimidators.
The Intimidators and Crawdads play Game 2 of this 4-game series on Friday as RHP Zach Thompson (5-2, 2.84 ERA) starts for Kannapolis against Hickory's RHP Dillon Tate (2-3, 5.31 ERA) with first pitch at 7:00 p.m. Kannapolis returns home on the Fourth of July to open a 3-game home stand highlighted by an Independence Day Fireworks Extravaganza presented by the City of Kannapolis following Monday's game.
