Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Shorebirds opened a four-game series in Hagerstown on Thursday night, featuring a match-up between the two best teams in the Northern Division after a thrilling first half playoff race. The series opener lived up to the billing, but Hagerstown's Angelo La Bruna launched his first career home run to walk-off against the Shorebirds, 3-2 in ten innings.
Pitching dominated the headlines all night until La Bruna's decisive blow. Brian Gonzalez wasn't locked in early on, but he battled through some adversity and limited Hagerstown to one run over six innings. Gonzalez struck out two and walked three, but more importantly, he picked off two runners and got a critical double-play in the sixth.
The Shorebirds got on the board first in the third inning, thanks to Alex Murphy's RBI double off the center field fence. But Hagerstown's Randy Encarnacion blooped a two-out single to right-center field and tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame.
The score remained tied at 1-1 until the top of the ninth because of terrific pitching and defense from both clubs. But with the bases empty and two outs in the top of the ninth inning, Cedric Mullins mashed his sixth homer of the season over the right field wall to give Delmarva a 2-1 lead.
Hagerstown opened the bottom of the ninth with its only hit against Jesus Liranzo - a double to right field. Rhett Wiseman lifted a one out fly ball to deep left field to bring home the tying run, forcing extra innings.
Delmarva left seven of its 10 runners on base at either second or third, including Natanael Delgado in the top of the tenth after his two out double. Hagerstown walked-off with the win in the bottom of the tenth just five pitches into the frame.
The series continues on Friday night at Municipal Stadium at 7:05 pm. Brendan Gulick will have the broadcast beginning with Shorebirds On-Deck at 6:50 pm on Fox Sports AM 960 and online at theshorebirds.com.
