OH SAY CAN YOU SEE: West Virginia bested Kannapolis 5-1 on Thursday night. Stephen Tarpley pitched seven innings of five-hit, one run ball, for his fourth win of the season; all of which have come on the road. The Power backed Tarpley with a run in the second on a RBI single by Elvis Escobar, added a run on a sac fly in the third and made it a 3-0 lead in the fourth when Taylor Gushue singled home Jerrick Suiter from third. In the eighth, Michael Suchy hit a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall with Connor Joe on first for a 5-1 edge. Tarpley moved to 4-2 with his second straight quality start while Thad Lowry took the loss for the Intimidators. Jerrick Suiter went 3-3 with two ground rule doubles, a walk and two runs scored and Suchy finished with two hits and three runs batted in to lead the Power.
BY THE DAWN'S EARLY LIGHT: West Virginia concludes a four-game series against the Kannapolis Intimidators tonight on the road. The Power hold a 59-57 lead in the all-time series and return to Kannapolis for a five-game series at Intimidators Stadium to close the 2015 season. West Virginia returns home to host Delmarva on Saturday.
WHAT SO PROUDLY WE HAIL'D: Stephen Tarpley remained perfect on the road with a 4-0 record courtesy of Thursday's win. The left-hander, acquired from Baltimore in January, also holds a stellar 1.23 earned run average away from home this season. Tarpley's next schedule start is slated for Tuesday's homestand finale against Delmarva.
AT THE TWILIGHT'S LAST GLEAMING: Austin Coley earned his tenth win of the season on Wednesday and became only the fourth pitcher in Power history to reach double-digit victories. Coley has matched Rudy Owens (2009) and Will Inman (2006) for the second-most wins in a single season and trails only Evan Anundsen's franchise record of 12 wins during the 2008 campaign. Anundsen accomplished the record over 28 starts.
WHOSE BROAD STRIPES: Michael Suchy homered for the second straight game and ran his hitting streak to seven straight on Thursday. The Power outfielder is batting .571 since Friday, June 26, with two home runs and 11 runs batted in. Suchy is batting .366 with four home runs and 19 runs batted in since June 1.
AND BRIGHT STARS: Six former Power players were selected as All-Stars this week for their current clubs. Elias Diaz will start behind the plate for the International League on July 15 and be joined by Alen Hanson on the squad. Josh Bell and Max Moroff will start for the Eastern League's Western Squad and will be joined on the roster by Jason Creasy and Dan Gamache.
THROUGH THE PERILOUS FIGHT: West Virginia batters walked 12 times Wednesday, matching the franchise record for walks by the offense in a single game. The last time the Power walked 12 times in one game was on July 22, 2010, in a 15-inning game against Savannah at Appalachian Power Park. The first was in a 14-inning game at Hagerstown in 2005.
O'ER THE RAMPARTS WE WATCH'D: West Virginia's Fourth of July Celebration will feature an extended version of postgame fireworks for all fans in attendance as the Power celebrate Independence Day.
WERE SO GALLANTLY STREAMING: West Virginia's 55 sacrifice bunts this season are the most in affiliated baseball... Michael Suchy became the first Power player this season to homer in back-to-back games... Ryan Kelly was promoted to the Atlanta Braves roster on Sunday and made his Major League debut on Tuesday evening. Kelly is the 46th former Power player to reach the Majors and second this season.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh completed a three-game sweep of Detroit with an 8-4 win. Francisco Liriano earned his fifth victory with seven shutout innings of work... Indianapolis Beat Toledo 7-3 on the strength of a five-run second inning. Corey Hart homered and Willy Garcia added three hits... Altoona lost 11-3 to Trenton. Jason Creasy allowed seven runs over four innings in the loss... Bradenton knocked of Charlotte 7-3. Edwin Espinal wend 3-4 with three runs batted in to back Tyler Eppler's first win... The Black Bears beat State College 7-1. Andy Otamendi picked up the win in relief of Stephan Meyer.
ON THE AIR: West Virginia Power games can be heard on Charleston's ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, online at wvpower.com and on the TuneIn Radio App.
