SALISBURY, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds could not overcome a big inning from the Lakewood BlueClaws, falling 6-2 in front of a sell-out crowd of 8,071 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Friday night.
The BlueClaws reeled off a rally for six unearned runs in the top of the fifth off of Shorebirds starter John Means, which was capped by a three-run homer from Jiandido Tromp. Means ended the outing going 4.2 innings, allowing no earned runs while striking out four.
The inning spoiled an early Delmarva lead that was grabbed in the bottom of the third. In that frame, Yermin Mercedes clubbed a one-out double and scored on a Steve Wilkerson sac fly.
Despite totaling only four hits on the evening, Delmarva still had a number of chances to get back into the game after getting the first two batters on base in the fifth and six innings. BlueClaws starter Chris Oliver and reliever Austin Davis, however, were able to escape the jams and keep the Shorebirds at bay.
Mercedes provided some more fireworks with a towering solo home run in the bottom of the seventh that cut the deficit to 6-2. Yermin's two-hit night capped a phenomenal homestand for the catcher, as he hit .444 (8-for-18) with two homers, five RBIs and seven runs scored.
Mike Burke provided a solid bullpen performance to keep Lakewood from pulling away any further. He pitched a season-high 3.1 perfect innings while striking out four and has now allowed zero runs in four of his last six appearances. Max Schuh pitched a scoreless ninth to mark his second scoreless outing in the last week.
After a successful 6-3 homestand, Delmarva will embark on its first road trip of the second half with a 4th of July contest in Charleston against the West Virginia Power. Brian Gonzalez (4-5, 5.40 ERA) is scheduled to start for Delmarva against Yeudy Garcia (4-5, 2.55). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
