THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia beat Delmarva 9-4 on Saturday evening. The Power took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a RBI single by Tito Polo and added two runs in the third on two singles and a sac fly. West Virginia extended the lead to five runs in the fifth when Elvis Escobar doubled and Tyler Filliben before scoring on a wild pitch. The Shorebirds plated two unearned runs against Power starter Stephen Tarpley in the bottom of the fifth. West Virginia scored three times in the sixth on three hits and two errors. The 'Birds added a run in the eighth and each team scored once in the ninth. Tarpley moved to 2-0 with his second win of the week. Escobar and Polo paced the Power with three hits each while Escobar and Chase Simpson drove in three and two runs, respectively.
FOR THE WIN: Saturday's victory guaranteed that, regardless of today's outcome, West Virginia will head home with a winning road trip record for the first time this season. The team split the first trip 3-3, went 2-4 on the second, split the third 4-4 and has gone 4-2 on this swing away from Charleston.
NEW LEADER: For the first time since April 26, a player other than Chase Simpson is leading West Virginia in batting average. Elvis Escobar went 3-5 on Saturday and is now batting .287 while Simpson went 1-5 to see his average fall to .278. Cole Tucker and Jerrick Suiter have matched Simpson at the top during the stretch, but no other player has been the outright leader over the last 35 days.
OUT OF THE LOOP: Jordan Luplow's hitting streak was snapped after nine straight with an 0-4 performance on Saturday. The infielder was just one game shy of matching his career high.
SUITS YOU WELL: In five games since being activated off the Power Disabled List, Jerrick Suiter is batting .375 with a home run and six runs batted in. The TCU product has also extended his on-base streak in each game played and has now been on base in each of his last 16 games dating back to April 16 prior to his stint on the DL. Suiter's hitting streak is at six games after going 1-3 on Saturday.
ALOHA MEANS HELLO FIRST BASE: Kawika Emsley-Pai has hit safely in six straight games and is batting .526 since May 16. The Power catcher has ten hits over his last 19 at bats. Emsley-Pai has also driven in at least one run in each of the six games during the streak and in eight of his last nine overall.
FLY AWAY: West Virginia and Delmarva will meet 15 total times this season, though this four game series is the Power's only trip to Salisbury, Maryland. Since 2005, the Power are Shorebirds have played 125 games against each other and West Virginia holds a 643-61 lead. The Shorebirds have a 31-23 mark at home in the all-time series.
POWER PROMO UPDATE- JUNE 2: West Virginia will host its first of two Pets in the Park this season at Appalachian Power Park on Tuesday, June 2. Fans are invited to bring their dogs, cats, and other ballpark-friendly animals for a night of fun in Charleston.
POWER POINTS: West Virginia's road record now at 12-13. The club has not held a winning record on the road since April 21... Tyler Filliben has reached safely in 15 consecutive games. Filliben has been on base at least once in each game he has played in the month of May, starting on May 3 at Greensboro... Jeff Roy was activated off the Power Disabled List on Friday. Roy suffered a wrist injury on May 16 while making a diving catch at Hagerstown.... Andy Otamendi was transferred to Extended Spring Training on Friday to clear a roster spot for Jeff Roy. Otamendi was promoted from Extended Sprint Training on Thursday, but did not appear in a game during his 19 hour stint on the active Power roster.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh beat San Diego 5-2. Charlie Morton earned his second win of the week... Indianapolis lost 9-8 Toledo. Alen Hanson went 3-3 with three runs batted in... Altoona obliterated Binghamton 13-4 on the strength of 17 hits, including three apiece from Josh Bell and Eric Wood... Bradenton dropped a 5-4 final against Jupiter. Steven Brault took his first loss of the season despite JaCoby Jones sixth home run of the year.
