Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds overcame two deficits on Sunday against the West Virginia Power, but could not find a big hit before falling to 4-3 in 10 innings at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
The Shorebirds loaded the bases in three innings, but failed to capitalize on those opportunities. As a team, the Shorebirds stranded a season-high 14 runners and hit just 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position.
Josh Walker went four innings in his Shorebirds debut, allowing just one run in the first inning on a Connor Joe single three batters into the game. He settled quickly after and would allow just one more hit in the remainder of his outing while striking out two runners and walking none.
After failing to capitalize on a bases loaded, no-out situation in the bottom of the first, the Shorebirds broke through in the fourth inning when an Elier Leyva double and a fielding error allowed Cam Kneeland to score and tie the game at 1-1.
The two teams exchanged runs in the sixth, with the Power going ahead 2-1 on a Connor Joe double before Leyva knotted the game again with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half.
The 'Birds had a golden opportunity to take their first lead in the eighth inning, when an error and single allowed the first two runners to reach base. Delmarva eventually loaded the bases with two outs in the inning, but Sam Street got Tanner Murphy to ground out to first to end the inning.
After the Shorebirds stranded the winning run in scoring position again in the ninth inning, the Power pulled ahead with three straight two-out hits off of reliever Mike Burke in the 10th. Joe got the rally started with a single before Michael Suchy's double gave West Virginia a 3-2 lead. The Power then added an insurance run on a Jerrick Suiter RBI single.
Delmarva did not go down without a fight in the bottom half of the 10th, as two singles combined with a walk loaded the bases a third time with two outs in the inning. Jay Gonzalez forced home a run with a walk, but Ronarsy Ledesma grounded into a force out to end the game.
The Shorebirds will look to get back on track when the Lakewood BlueClaws return to Perdue Stadium for the start of a three-game series on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. The Shorebirds have yet to announce a starter for tomorrow's game, but they will face Lakewood RHP Tyler Viza (3-1, 3.45).
Monday's game will be a 47 ABC Two Buck Monday, where general admission tickets, Esskay hot dogs and 12-ounce Pepsi products will all be just $2.
